Acronis sits in a "Preparing" state and will not move beyond that on my Mac. Any ideas?

I'd kick it off at night before bed and check it in the morning. LIke IanL-S was saying, it may need time to read the existing content first and you're going to be pushing a fairly good chunk to the cloud. Uploading to the cloud is generally a lot slower than downloading since most ISP's limit upload speed (average of 1/10th the download speed). You can test your upload speed and download speed at speedtest.net. Whatever your upload speed is there, estimate about 65% of that will be used for your Acronis backup to the Cloud. It took me nearly a week (constant upload the entire time) to upload about 500GB while I was averaging 4-5Mbps upload speed. The subsequent deltas to the cloud have been much faster, but really depends on how much data has changed between backups. A full OS upgade can result in an equally large backup session again!
For what it's worth...
Cloud is great for offsite disaster recovery, but it is pretty slow with just about all backup services. if possible, take local backups to a USB external drive or NAS for quick backup and recovery as your primary source. Should things go really bad (like your house burns down with your computer and your backup disk), then you have your offsite cloud backup to fall back on.
As an IT Standard rule of thumb, try to use the 3-2-1 backup method to provide reduncancy of data and backups...
3 sources of data (1 original and at least 2 backups) + a minimum of 2 backup locations (such as local and cloud) + at least 1 of those backups being stored remotely/offsite.
