Scheduled backups will not run with build 6581

Thread needs solution

I have run into a problem trying to run build 6581.  None of my scheduled backups will start.  My computer will wake up from a sleep mode at the proper time but ATI will not start.  All of the required processes appear to be running as normal.  I deleted my old schedule and created a new one but no luck.

If I revert back to the previous version by restoring my latest “image”, everything works fine then. (I would not have a problem running the last version as it did not cause any issues on my system but I get constant notifications that a new version is available.  I had to turn off all notifications on the computer to stop the annoying behavior as I have not found a way to turn off Just ATI’s.

I’m running windows 10 64bit home.

Any resolution ideas would sure be helpful.

Thanks and have a great day!

Make sure that you have the setting enabled to run at system startup with delay in minutes (I set mine to 2 minutes as well to make sure other Windows services are fully up and running first).

If it is and it's not doing it's job, I have a feeling that fast start is the problem.  With fast start, the system goes to hibernation but does not trigger a full shutdown and start and for some reason neither does sleep when it's on.

As a test, reboot your machine and see if the missed backup starts running or not. If it does, it's fastboot that's the issue:  http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4189-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-10-a.html

I am experiencing a similar issue with build 6581 on my Windows 10 64b system.

Before the installation of that build all my scheduled backups are runing smoothly.

Now, none of them are runing either manualy nor scheduled.

I've tried to delete the complete backup and settings but this didn't solve the issue.

When I click start backup, a progress bar appears that says Backup beeing processed , calculating remaining time.

But the progess bar never changed.

Also, clicking the Stop button on the progress bar did not stop the backup. I need to use Windows taskmananger to terminate the process.

Appreciate any help on how to troubleshoot.

Thanks Bodo

Bodo, please download the Log File Viewer app (link in my signature below) and use this to check for what messages may be being written to the log files on your system, in particular, to the Service logs for your tasks, and to the Scheduler2 logs for the schedule function.

Bodo, in addition to the logs, could you also open an elecated command prompt (right click and run as administrator).  Then type the following and press enter

vssadmin list writers

You should see several entries similar to:

Writer name: 'Task Scheduler Writer'
   Writer Id: {d61d61c8-d73a-4eee-8cdd-f6f9786b7124}
   Writer Instance Id: {1bddd48e-5052-49db-9b07-b96f96727e6b}
   State: [1] Stable
   Last error: No error

Look for any thta show an error - especially any that look like they may belong to Acronis.

Also, just to check, could you also review the following on your machine...  I pulled this from another site, but don't have any vss providers listed in Acronis 2017 and am curiuos if they are in 2016, or if this is from an older version that the site was referencing...

Step 1: Open the Registry Editor (Start -> Run -> enter "regedit", hit enter)

Step 2: Navigate to the entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\VSS\Providers

Step 3: Look for entry {5fc845eb-f299-40f0-9725-34045f7ea8ba} or {f5dbcc43-b847-494e-8083-f030501da611}.  Actually, if you have any listed, check them all and see if any are Acronis.  You can confirm it's Acronis (or not) by opening it up and checking the provider name.

Thank you very much for your input, appreciate it very much.

Meanwhile I did a reinstallation of ATI 2016 and that solved the Issue.

I need to recreate my scheduled backups and automated and manual backups are runing fine now.

Thanks again Bodo

sorry, but the problem seems to persist.

I recreated all of my scheduled backups (each for a different drive) , two of them are runing fine.

However, the other hangs, i.e. there is no backup progress. The progress bar  did not show any progress for hours.

I've tried to stop the backup but that did not work, it still stopping the job.

From windows Task manager i see four tasks Acronis True Image 2016 (32bit) which I terminate now.

Thanks Steve for providing the Log file reader which I've installed. It shows log entry for the completed job.

Also I ran vssadmin list writers, but I did not get any results from that, no entries are listed.

Please see attachment for content of the registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\VSS\Providers

Thanks Bodo

OK,

1) Make sure your schedule >>> advanced settings have the option to "run at system startup with delay (in minutes)" enabled.  I would also change it from 0 to 2 minutes to give it a little extra time.

2) If that doesn't work by itsefl, try setting the Acronis scheduler service from automatic, to delayed automatic and reboot.  Some users systems take longer to load Windows services so the 3rd party ones don't get a chance to start within the 2 minute requirement.  By setting to automatic-delayed, it gives additional time that may help - it has helped others.

3) If 1+2 don't work together, then add this one on top of those. The issue could be with FASTBOOT - did you check if it is enabled or not?  If so, disable hibernation, which will turn off fastboot.  Reboot after that and see if your scheduled backup start running again.  If you have an SSD , turning off fastboot should not slow your boot very much, if at all.  You'll probably notice slower boot times if you have a spinning drive though.  Basically fastboot, is just hibernation which makes the computer appear to boot faster.  But, Acronis doesn't respond to hibernation as a true shutdown/start up so the setting to run missed backups doesn't kick in when fastboot is enabled until you reboot (since rebooting triggers a full restart and skips hibernation).

4) If 1-3 didn't help, you may have an actual system VSS issue.  Follow the instructions on this thread post and disable VSS for one backup job and see if it runs or not when you manually kick off that job after VSS has been disabled (which allows Acronis to backup with the proprietary snapapi method which was the default in 2014 and earlier versions). If it works without VSS enabled, chances are it's a VSS issue on your machine - how or why since you say it was working, but not since installing 6581 and still not after going back, I can't say.

5) Last but not least - go complete cleanup and then reinstall 6581 fresh.  You can still use your old backups with offline recovery media, and/or even import them again, but I'd hold onto them for posterity and use them with recovery media if you do really need to recover for them.  By uninstalling and then running the cleanup process, you're starting with a completely fresh install of Acronis which will hopefully be trouble free, but you'll have to reconfigure new backup jobs. Here is the complete process to really ensure you've cleaned everythng up before you install again.

Thank you for your suggestions!

I disabled Microsoft VSS services, FASTBOOT/hibernation wasn't enabled on my system.

I also set the "run at system startup with delay " option for my backups

It seems that the issues disapeared for one of my scheduled backups, perhaps the cause were existing backup-files in the target folder.

Thanks again

Bodo

You might want to Cold Start your PC on occasion which often will resolve issues with VSS.  In Windows 10 a cold start can be performed by selecting Restart from the Power Options menu.
