Deleting backups

Thread needs solution

In help it says "in the backup section right click a backup"  I have no idea how to get to this section.  For the backup I want there are only 4 buttons along the bottom and none lead me to a choice of files.

It says deletes must be done through Acronis because of it's internal database so I can't delete through the PC explorer.  What should I do?

Richard, not sure where you are looking at in the help text but if you are looking at the main Acronis GUI, then you should see your backup task(s) that allow you to create the backup image files, and to the right of the task name(s) you should see an icon shown as 'V' which if you click on this will show you further options in a drop down menu.

The Delete option in this menu will allow you to delete the backup task, either just the task settings alone, or to delete both the task, settings and all the files for the task, but I doubt that this is what you are looking for.

The recommended method for deleting backups is to use the Automatic Cleanup options that are shown in the task Options page for the Backup Scheme.

With automatic cleanup, you can choose which method you want to use for determining how many files you want to keep, but please understand that this works on completed backup version chains, i.e. a full backup image plus any incremental or differential backup images for that full backup before a further new backup is made.

If you use 'Store no more than X recent version chains' for the automatic cleanup rule, then you need to have enough free space to hold X+1 backup chains, this is because automatic cleanup will only run when the X+1 full backup image has been successfully created - this to avoid deleting files that may be needed before a new backup has been made.

You can delete backup image files using Windows Explorer but if you do so, then the information that is stored in the Acronis Database about your backups will be out of sync with the status of the files on your backup drive.  If you do this, then please run a Validation for your backup task that created the deleted files to allow this to try to reconcile the information in the database with the files still present.  You will get a pop-up message from validation for each missing/deleted file for which you should take the Ignore option.

Thanks Steve,

I know the cleanup options but I have some tib files which when validating, hung at the last minute and also dont restore (it chooses an older one to restore)  So I want to delete individual tibs not all of them and it says the internal Acronis database will not know if I delete in windows explorer..

It seems the only choice acronis offers now is delete all?

Richard, what are the individual .tib files?  If these are incrementals, then you cannot delete these without breaking the whole backup version chain that they are a part of.  If they are differentials, then they can be deleted.  In either case, if you delete via Explorer, running a Validation for the backup task that created them is needed to resolve the Acronis Database information and reconcile against the files still present.
