Backup can't restore

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I've created multiple backups of my windows 10 system(2 full, with 3 incremental each). But on restore it didn't work and gave corrupted index error when it was almost finished.

Because I restored it through the recovery disk it already formatted my disk so now I have nothing.

It's not possible to mount the image backups to run chkdsk in windows as it can't link a drive letter.

After nothing worked I recreated all disk partitions with a new windows installation, formatted the c drive again and restored everything through file(so not partition) restore from my backup. So now all files are availble. But it doesn't work, when starting after the bios screen I get a black screen and windows is not start. Startup repair from the windows disk is also not working.

Is there anything else I can try to get my backup running on my pc again?

Thank you

ps. I used acronis 2015 to backup twice a week and also to restore. When that didn't work I also tried the trail boot disk from acronis 2017 to restore and it did also not work. Both are the newest versions available.

Christian, welcome to these User Forums.

Sorry to hear of the problem that you are having.

Doing a files & folders restore of your OS drive backup will never work and not give a bootable system as there are too many interdependencies between files and the Windows registry etc.

What you can try doing, is just restoring only your C: drive partition again, assuming that any other partitions (such as the Microsoft Reserved or EFI partitions) have been left as they were when you had a working new windows installation.  You need to do a disks & partitions type restore and do this from the Acronis bootable rescue media.

How many of your backup images have you tried to restore to your drive?  You say you have 2 x Full and 3 x Incrementals per full backup, so you could try working you way backwards through these, or go to the oldest Full backup and try that?

Hi,

I've tried to only restore C. But this is the only disk which can't be restored. All others can be restored fine. I've tried this from the bootable rescue media disk.

I tried to restore all of them and they all fail when they are almost finished and say corrupt index.

I got the backup mounted in acronis 2017 but there is no write option available so I'm not able to run chkdsk. In the latest version where this is available(2014) I'm not able to mount the backup as it says: Index corrupted

Is there anything else I can try?

What do you have actually restored on the disk drive for the C: partition after the restore operation has given the index error?

If you boot from the Rescue Media again and take the option to do a backup of files & folders, do you see all the normal OS folders etc?

If you do, then you could try booting from your Windows 7 install DVD and opening a Command prompt Windows then running CHKDSK /F from there for your C: drive.

When it gives an error the C: partition isn't there. After I did the restore of files and folders I tried chkdsk but it wasn't working . I think there aren't many options left right? I probably have to reinstall the whole machine.

Christian, do you have a spare disk drive that you could try to restore the backup to in order to eliminate any issues with the original drive?

The only other suggestion would be to open a Support Case directly with Acronis to see if they can offer any help in overcoming the corrupt index issue here?

Christian, since my last post above, another user came back with feedback on a very similar problem with an index issue within a .TIB file.

See topic: run list corrupted true image 2017 "windows" (and acronis backup 11.7 / 12.5 "linux")

To try and interpret the solution found by this other user.

You would need a second computer with ATIH installed where you can mount one of your backup images, probably best to use a full image.

With the backup mounted to a drive letter, open a command prompt window and run CHKDSK against the mounted drive letter and let it run to see if it finds an issue.  Please use a copy of the backup image in case any changes are made to it.

Strictly speaking this shouldn't make a difference but it appears to have worked for this other user and allowed him to get past the corrupt index issue!  I have also seen this advised by Acronis but without any feedback to say it has worked or not!

Hi,

Thank you I also tried that but that's not possible with acronis 2017 as it doesn't have the write option available anymore. I reinstalled my whole machine yesterday night so it's not needed anymore. Quite a pity it wasn't working like it should.

Anyway thank you for your help

Christian, thanks for the feedback, sorry that you had to do the full OS reinstall to get a working system back again.  Hope all continues to be OK for you.
