Hard drive swap process

Thread needs solution

hello and background first.

1. Dell XPS 8700 running Win 8.1 Pro 64 bit

2. C: is a SSD,  D: is 3TB HDD (data drive)

3. current backup is Seagate Dashboard to a USB3.0  slim Seagate HDD

4. Just purchased ATI2018 and a full PC backup is currently running to Acronis Cloud. Default with encryption (10 upstream, i'm dyin' here).

5. after the cloud backup completes, i intend to run a concurrent backup (default without encryption) to the USB HDD

6.  lastly, i'm not a tech

now the question.  the D: drive has failed a Dell self test and will be replaced.  i plan to swap out the D: drive and then restore from the USB HDD (for speed sake, although i do have 250 downstream internet). does this plan sound correct?  i have been doing some reading, but not being a tech is hamstringing me a little.  thx, ron

Ron, welcome to these User Forums.

The Acronis Cloud backup will take some time if your upload speed is only 10mbps and this will have the knock-on effect of causing any new backups to your local HDD to be queued until it is either finished or you pause it.

The good news here is that the failing D: drive is not your Windows OS boot drive, so you can take a number of different approaches to how you get the data from it to your new drive.

The simplest method could be to just connect a replacement new drive (either internally if that is an option, else via a USB adapter or a docking station), then use a program such as the built-in Windows ROBOCOPY utlity to copy all your files directly from the old to the new drive.

You could also do as you mentioned and make a backup of the failing drive to a third backup drive then restore this to the new drive (after removing the old drive and replacing with the new) but this will take longer to perform as you have the intermediate stage to create the backup then restore it back.  The benefit of this method is having a backup on your third drive in case the old drive decides to turn-up its toes!

thx steve.  i was hoping to hear that.  since i will do a concurrent backup to the local usb hdd, that's the one i will use to restore from.  now if the cloud backup ever finishes.  it threw a few errors back to back and appears to have restarted, although cloud usage would indicate that it is about 3/4 done.  teething pains for me.  thx again, ron
