"MS" Vss can it be turned off?

Thread needs solution

Hello all,
Question , Is it OK to switch off "MS" Vss ( not using system restore ) on Windows 7\64 home premium ...or does TI 2011 v 7046 need to have it running to create backups ?

Hi Fred, TI2011 does not require VSS to be running as far as I am aware.

Bin,
Hello.. and thank you for responding. There seems to be some confusion about this, so i tried to do a backup with "Vss " switched off.... and it seemed to work OK .. Comparing to an Image taken just before, and one with "Vss" switched off. Both could be "mounted" and the compressed numbers were essentially the same. MS shows only one Vss provider , and nothing about acronis ... wonder how TI does this ? Regards Fred

Fred, you are very welcome.

I don't know how familiar you are with what VSS does or the concept but basically it allows you to make backups of files that are open and active while still being used by the operating system in a stable state. Acronis software is well aware of this and uses it if needs be depending on the sort of backup your system may be trying to make at the time. VSS is a microsoft thing and not an Acronis thing. For me I avoid any microsoft operating system type things concerning system backups as much as possible. Therefore I make system backups either by using the boot disc or the ASRM which is most useful because during those times Windows is not loaded!

Bin,
Hello...The "images" that i did ( Vss on \ Vss off ) were run while i was booted up and running Windows (7\ 64 ) Also while i was doing this i was watching (system configuration ) to see if Vss would "switch on" while doing the backups... it never changed from "stopped" (have backup and restore switched off ) Somehow TI must have something that will "freeze" the system so it can take a "snapshot" Do you know if TI has its own type of "vss scheme"? Regards Fred

Bin ,
Well ... guess I'll have to do some more research ... Thanks for your help
Regards Fred

You are so welcome Fred and not so plain. like you I just want it to work and for me TI does. If it does not for you then keep on saying why not.
Edit :what i wrote before makes no sense

TI does make a snapshot of your drive, but not in the same way as VSS.

This is one reason why TI is very RAM intensive and TI will report RAM problems that other heavy RAM user programs don't notice.

The SNAPApi driver from Acronis is the component that performs this function.

Colin B,
Hello and thank you for clearing that for Bin and myself. Best
