Backup to non local NAS possible?

Thread needs solution

Hi folks,

I would like to backup my PC to a NAS, that is not in the same network. Is that possible with Acronis True Image 2016?

Thank you!

Chris, welcome to these public User Forums.

You can use FTP if wanting to backup to your NAS in a different network but you should use the ATI encryption option when doing so, as Acronis only support basic insecure FTP, not FTPS.

See the ATI 2016 User Guide section on FTP connections

If the NAS is attached to a Windows environment the best way to do this would be to setup the NAS as a shared location on the network.  Then use a Remote Desktop tool to log on to the other network to access the NAS.  You should then be able to establish an authenticated connection on the network where the NAS is located and have access to the NAS.

This would allow for the use of SMB to be used rather than FTP.

Actually I thought of connecting an external harddrive to my router with media server capabilities. Any thoughts on that feasability wise?

Thanks a lot!

Sebastian that should work similarly. You may still need to authenticate to it unless you leave it open or public (not recommended though). I have done this with my Netgear AC1900 router without much issue other than my router requires a FAT32 drive so .tibs were brok n out to 2Gb chunks. Wasn't a big deal in that setup though.

The attached HD to your router works pretty well.  I have one setup like that myself.  I use a WD MyBook USB 3.0 drive attached to a USB 3.0 port on an ASUS RT-AC3200 router.  The setup is not very speedy but does work and can be use to deliver/stream media.

In my case I must provide logon to the router itself to gain access to the hard drive and I think in most cases that will be true.  I would strongly discourage having a public account on your router to the device personally!

I too  have experimented with USB HDD attached to router - in my case Asus  RT-AC68U. You need to check the settings in the Router, as the options can change over time. For example, there may be a setting for USB 2 or USB 3. My cable Modem/Router also supports USB HDD but I have not tried it as yet.

So it is defintiely an option worth investigating.
