To mount or not to mount

Thread needs solution

I have noticed tons of references to "mounting"; so many that they boggle my mind. Where to begin??

I checked "Help" for a simple explanation for how it works but the word doesn't even come up in my search of the help file. Other searches, here for example, came up with too many finds!

It appears that I can use this feature to create a copy of my HD so, in the event of a major crash, I can simply restore the saved "image" of the drive; stored on an external drive, and be up and running on a brand new drive; without having to install and reconfigure all my software and settings.

Can someone give me a simple explanation of this process and the simplest way to create one and use it?

Begin with Actions->Mount image. It does not create a copy, instead it presents content of the existing backup as a volume with a letter, read-only or writeable, that is accessible by the OS and al programs as a regular drive. But it will not help you after major crash, because it works only on running operating system. For restore, there is restore operation. To hav esomething to restore, create a backup (of all data or only system volume) first.
