Pre/post Command Fails

Thread needs solution

Windows 10  ATI 2020 Build 22510

  • I'm backing up to another LAN machine where ATI backups are stored on an external USB drive
  • Because Windows excludes Outlook OST files from the backups, I have added a batch file to the backup task Post-command to create a copy of the OST file
  • The location of the copied OST file is in a sub folder adjacent to the folder that holds the ATI backup files
  • ATI does not interpret or report the failed execution as an error
  • However, to assist in trouble shooting, I am redirecting the batch file UI output to file and can see the error
    • At the start of the batch file, I added a "Dir" command (to the target folder)
    • The result : The system cannot find the path specified.
  • If I define the batch file as a Pre-command, it presents the same failure

  • I had created a separate user to perform backups
    • The backup user is defined as Admin on both the ATI host machine and backup target machine
    • The backup user's configuration on the host ATI machine has the needed target drive mappings defined
  • If I login as the backup user on the ATI host
    • I can select the mapped backup drive, and edit files in the target folder referenced by the Post-command
    • After saving the Post Command in the backup task, I use the same credentials that successfully executes the ATI backup

Any help much appreciated

Does your post command work correctly if you copy the Outlook OST file to a local folder on the same computer?

If yes, then perhaps a way around this issue, assuming you have ATI installed on the other LAN computer, would be to setup an Acronis Sync for the local folder to the target folder on the second computer, then join that sync on that other machine.

Good idea, I had not thought to try that, also, was not aware of Acronis Sync

Can Acronis Sync just grab the original OST file or is it also affected by the Win exclusions?

I see that ATI Sync only applies to folders which would be excessive so will try copying to a local folder and then syncing.

Any idea why the command fails to find the drive immediately after the ATI backup can access it?

When trying to setup the sync, after selecting the source folder, I get the error

There is a connection problem or an error on the server. Check your Internet connection or try again later.

The Sync should be being setup for just the local folder on the computer running ATI, so that shouldn't give any connection or server problems.  You would need an Acronis Cloud subscription for any sync to that location but you can sync between local PC's.

Please download the MVP Log Viewer tool (link in my signature below) and use this to review the log file for your sync operation. This should provide more information on what is happening.

See the following screen images for a successful new sync to my local PC's.

The above log just shows that the sync is setup fine but I haven't joined it from any other computers yet, hence the error code and message: There are no participants online.

I never see the screen in your last screen shot.

Below is the relevant data from the logs for my last sync attempt.

There are many other entries in the log so assume ATI is using the sync during normal backup as well

Is the SyncAgent service running on your computer?

I don't use Outlook so I may be out of my domain here, but as an alternative approach could the OST file be copied first to the local machine via a pre command such that the ATI task will then back that up. Then a post command could delete it.

And another question is how is the batch file defined. There have been differences in how a batch file works depending on whether it is a .bat or .cmd file.

The only other potential issues are if Acronis is being blocked by any installed security software or firewall?  It may also have issues with proxy servers or VPN type connections.

Bruno- I hadn't thought of that but it sounds like it would work, thanks

Steve- I tried another approach last night: I executed the Post-Command from the other PC that hosts the backup drive.

It had no problem accessing the source PC and successfully completed the copy. Not sure why as the credentials relationship was the same.

Also, I'm going to post another thread as a Backup Tip for others trying to backup their Outlook data.files since there appears to be no way to keep them from being excluded from ATI backups.

As always, many thanks for all your help!

Backing up outlook files can be painful. There are various non-Acronis solutions I have tried over the years. I am currently using 4Team Safe PST Backup which is free; it backs up *.pst and *.ost, but does not backup Exchange Server emails accounts. There is a paid version which adds a few features.

I have not yet needed to use it "in anger" so cannot vouch for its effectiveness.

Since Windows VSS skips OST files by default, perhaps another alternative would be to rename the file extension in a pre script (whatever you want it to be... could be anything, such as .bak) and then name it back in a post script.  Theoretically, this would backup the file, but that assumes that it's not currently in use.

So as a two-pronged approach, you'd probably still want to make a copy first and then rename it and back that up to avoid messing with the original - just in case.

Personally, I'd just use robocopy or something like that to make a duplicate of it to another location and call it a day, but if you need it backed up, that might be a quick fix.  There are other sync tools out there that are free and work quite well, but for me, I just use robocoy for my own sync needs.  You can make a simple .bat script and call on them as pre/post scripts in Acronis, or as scheduled tasks in Windows, or just manually click them to run them as needed.

I also like allway sync - they have a free and a paid version if you like the free version and need to be able to do more with it.
