Make HDD bootable

Thread solved

I have cloned my C: drive HDD to an identical 1TB HDD in a caddy connected to a USB port. I did this so as to keep an emergency spare HDD. I now read that the HDD clone may not be bootable if I exchange it with the one inside the PC. Is this true? Is there any way to make it bootable? As my PC is an HP Pavilion all-in-one I don't particularly want to take it to bits just to check the HDD clone works. Advice please.

Robert, welcome to these public User Forums.

If you have cloned your C: drive successfully, then the drive should be identical to the original source drive.  The key factor that can change this is if the external caddy introduces new hardware that can then cause the drive to not boot correctly when fitted internally in the PC.

The best method to avoid this is to make a full disk backup of the source drive and store this on an external backup drive, then if you have any future problems with the source drive, you can recover back to a working state by using the backup image after booting from the Acronis rescue media.

The key advantage about making disk backups is that you can do this from within Windows and keep the backup image updated regularly to allow recovering back to any particular point in time that exists by virtue of the regular backups.

This explanation is so clear it really deserves to go in the online instructions. Very reassuring reply thanks.
