Restoring a bootable OS to a dissimilar HDD with universal restore

Thread needs solution

Hi, I'm new to the forums as well as Acronis itself. I was recommended this program by a friend who does computer maintenance and backups/restores for his friends and family. I have however run into some serious problems with the software, and I'm hoping someone can help me get the task at hand done as well as possibly fix the tainted image I have of the product.

What I'm trying to do is a full disk restore using Universal Restore. The disk was made using Acronis True Image Home 2011, though at the moment I qm unsure of the version number exactly. The original disk was a Hitachi Deskstar 160GB IDE/PATA drive in an Old HP pavilion desktop model, running the most updated version of Win XP SP3 possible. The system was stable and the disk was run for errors multiple times both using Windows chkdsk and Linux based smartctl both Gui in Ubuntu 10.10 and through the terminal in Knoppix 6, to check the intergrity. The drive was then removed, placed in my desktop workstation, and imaged to a file. The backup was then validated and a subsequent copy was also made to an external Seagate BlackArmor drive from which it was to be mounted in the client's desired system.

Which brings me to the system it was to be moved to. The "new" system, or new home for the OS to be exact, was to be a newer model of Pavillion desktop than the original. This system contains a 250GB SATA drive, single no raid, Western Digital Caviar. I obtained drivers for the SATA and RAID controllrrs from the HP website appropriate for the machine.

At this point I proceeded to boot the "new" system using the bootable media I created using the Plus Pack. I selected the backup from the portable drive, specified the folder location of the drivers, and set my backup options. I selected both the NTFS partition and the MBR/track 0 partitions, used defaults for free space after and preceeding free space. I then ran the recovery.

It seemed to go smoothly. Finished, I rebooted the machine to Windows and.... BSOD. Assuming that I had done it wrong, I nuked the drive with a full pass with DBAN to clear the drive and attempted to run the recovery again. This time however, I recieve an error stating that I do not have enough space on the drive for recovery and the OS may not boot after the process. I cannot go anywhere else with the process now.

So I hope someone can help me fix these errors and get me on the right track to finishing what I started. Especially since I bought Acronis TI specifically so I COULD restore to dissimilar devices and have systems work after. And it's not easy dropping this much dough on something with college books and other things to buy. Thanks in advance for any help.

John,

Try to run chkdsk /r on your disk for good measure. We need to get past your space issue...

About the drivers, are they unpacked?
