Need to migrate to a new laptop, OS is the same, How can I migrate all my installed Applications?

Thread needs solution

I currently have Acronis True Image 11 Home. I need to migrate from a Dell Latitude D630 to an E5410. The OS levels are the same XP Pro V2002 SP3. I would like to be able to migrate over all my installed applications without having to re-install them. My concern is if I clone my old drive and restore it onto the new system the drivers will all be wrong and the system may not work. Is there a way to migrate the installed programs and the registry without changing the drivers? Do I need to upgrade to newer version of the software or do i need a different product entirely to do this?

Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, no.

Backup your new disk to a disk image for safekeeping.

Restore the old disk image to the new laptop using the recovery CD. If you get a BSOD on reboot, this will mean your system has controllers/drivers different enough from your old system to prevent Windows from running out of the gate.

You can purchase 2011 with the Plus Pack (you said you have v11, maybe you have already 2011).
With PP, you can create a recovery CD that features Universal Restore. THis feature lets you point ATI to key drivers during the restore (essentially disk controllers). Then Windows can boot without the BSOD. There will be plenty of other drivers that Windows will have to update, but this is OK.

Since you have the new laptop with the OS, you know you have all the necessary drivers in the Windows/System32/Drivers directory. Just need to copy these to a USB disk that you can access during universal restore.

Universal Restore sounds simple, but it is not as easy as it sounds. This is still a good alternative though.

Hello all,

Thank you for posting and helping.

David, I will do my best to help you.

I would also recommend to check the following KB article, it explains why applications cannot be restored from a backup.

As a workaround, you can recover data from your backup. Please check this article for more information.

If you have additional questions, please let me know.

Thank you.
