Acronis changing "max usage" slider in system restore

With VSS disabled the True Image product will revert to its native Snapapi shapshot method which has been around for a long time and has been updated for each product release. This is a tried and ture method for creating snapshots for back up creation.
As for recovery, using the snapapi method would not cause ATI to "stumble" as your put it in any way. Recovery of files folders from within the Windows installed application would not use snapshotting to the best of my knowledge anyway. Recovery of a Windows OS system disk is done with the OS disk offline in a recovery environment so VSS does not apply there either. So recovery of data is not impacted by this issue.
Remeber, if VSS is disabled Windows System Restore will not function so if that method is applied and you still want to use Restore Points you would need to re-enable VSS after creating a backup with True Image where VSS was dsabled to do so.

I can confirm that I am also experiencing the unwanted change in Restore Point usage being set to 100% of disk space.
I was actually on this forum looking for an answer to a different problem and found this thread accicdentally. I then ran a test of resetting the Restore Point usage to 10%, ran one off my scheduled backups and Restore Point usage went to 100%. This problem has been bugging me for quite some time.
The problem I was investigating was removing scheduled backups to clear disk space on a backup drive and it seems this too is a problem for many. Seems it can only be achieved via the boot CD which, as per other users surprise, is somewhat lacking in user experience.
All this leads me to concur with all those users who have become disgruntled enough to actually abandon Acronis completely.
I am not having a go at any of the Moderators of this forum, I understand your role.
But it seems to me that for an average user who wants to simply pay for peace of mind and then finds out they have to be some sort of technical wizard just to achieve the core function of the software they paid for, well it is obvious that they will be a bit upset. I only say this because this is the third major problem i have found with Acronis and while I am managing to achive my goals, I can understand that many will give up.
The most important point here is the "peace of mind' term I used, backup software should inspire confidence, not create endless problems.

An update on this problem in ATI 2016:
I logged this issue with Acronis 4 weeks ago. After a couple of suggestions, which led to no resolution, I was asked by Acronis support to install the trial of ATI 2017. Exactly the same behaviour with ATI 2017 as in ATI 2016.
There is currently no resolution except with the script modification, which I do not see as a resolution as most end users are not IT savvy.
More annoyingly, I have been left with a trial version of ATI 2017 on my PC, which is about to expire. When I asked Acronis about this, I got no response.

I would recommend dropping a PM to Gaidar as General Manager Acronis True Image with reference to this topic and your support case number, and ask if he can arrange to provide a license serial for the trial ATIH 2017 that support asked you to install for this problem.

Hello All,
Good detective work to find the conflict between ATI/VSS. I found this thread while searching for reasons that system restore kept increasing to 100% all the time, and I suspected Acronis may be involved.
I appreciate the advice to edit the backup script to VSS=false, however my affected PCs do have an application using SQL database. I noticed a caveat regarding VSS vs. SnapAPI posted by Igor in another thread (https://forum.acronis.com/forum/104089):

Disabling VSS in favor of our own snapshot shouldn't cause any problems for regular systems.
However, it is definitenly not recommended if you are running VSS-aware databases (like MS SQL).

It looks I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place - VSS=false resolves my 100% resizing issue, but is not recomended for the data I'm trying to backup.
What do I do?!?!

David, this is an issue that we cannot fix from this user forum - please raise a support case with Acronis Support to add your voice to the users who are experiencing this issue and seeking a remedy. Refer to this forum topic and submit an Acronis System Report with your case so that Acronis have as much information as possible to be able to work on this for you and the others impacted by it.

Although this does not address the issue with VSS, I would not rely on anybackup of SQL while it is running, other than the SQL backup options. You can have SQL backup your database at specificified times and then backup those up with Acronis using the Snapapi method. You're playing with fire if you're only relying on live SQL or Oracle databases and not making backups of them with SQL as well.
This can be automated so the backups in SQL, occur at scheduled times. Then back those up with Acronis.

I know this post is ancient by today's standards, but I'm having this exact issue with TI 2021. It only happens when I actually DO a backup. I can launch TI and fiddle around but nothing happens with system restore config. As soon as I actually do a backup (I only backup locally), I can check the system restore config after it finishes and it will be 100%. There's no help in the event log. This may be a VSS issue, but on my computer I've only seen it with TI. I didn't know what was causing it and ran across this post. I'm running Windows 10 20H2, pretty much with latest updates. ASUS Prime Z390A MB, Core I7 9th gen, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050. UEFI BIOS and all disks are GPT. It's annoying, but I now know that after I backup, I have to go fix it (which I sometimes forget).

I suggest you post in the ATI 2021 forum as you are more likely to get a useful response.

This has been driving me up a wall for years, and only happened on one of my OS installs; the one with Acronis' software running nightly backups on it.
Unbelievable to think this has been an issue since at least 2016, and is still an issue in current versions of the software (now titled "cyber protect").
Volume shadow copies are extremely important for sudden data loss due to file deletions or unwanted overwrites. I've recovered numerous things with them thanks to nirsoft's tools (shadow copy view). Having suffering this Acronis issue, I've lost a number of things as well. As of updating Windows to a newer Enterprise build and having to lose all my shadow copies, my main OS partitions are NOT having shadow copies generated anymore no matter what I do, and they're the only partitions that get automatically set to 100% by Acronis. This is disastrous.
And the only thing people can say is "this is a user forum" and "post in x section" and "contact acronis support".
Clearly, if this has been happening for at least 7 years, Acronis doesn't care.
Now, I don't know where people are editing backup scripts manually, but I assume this is the option for it in ATI 2020:
I'll at least get an answer myself if this stops the issue tonight.
EDIT: Yes, this did stop it setting to 100% when the backup run.
Unfortunately, VSS's are not being created on my C drive regardless of what Acronis is set to. This seems to be a Windows bug I don't know how to resolve. As usual, updating Windows leads to more and more issues, because god forbid Microsoft QA their changes anymore. They even stopped this process back with Windows 7 and the changes to the big monthly pack update, so it's nothing new, but sure as hell got even worse with Windows 10 and its "live service" model.

I worked around this issue by using "Advanced>Post Commands" and then using the following .CMD file
schtasks.exe /RUN /TN Walt\VSSADMIN
Then I setup a task called VSSADMIN that executes this command.
C:\Windows\System32\vssadmin.exe resize shadowstorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=20GB
This is still working. I only use system restore on my C drive. I have since converted all my disks to GPT and have a UEFI bios, so maybe I don't need it anymore. I don't remember why I used a task rather than just executing the command, but I guess I had a reason. Anyhow, this may work for you. It will keep TI from resizing it. Of course you should change the "20GB" to whatever.

So following up my last post, changing to "Acronis Snapshot" did stop the 100% setting to system restore.
Unfortunately, and I don't know if this is a Windows bug or some interaction with Acronis, but I just found out when going to recover something that Acronis is not backing up my C drive anymore. It shows it in the recovery list, but it's completely empty.
Additionally, the C drive is now permanently disabled with writing shadow copies. It doesn't matter what I set the % to, doesn't matter if I delete copies, disable the system, re-enable, anything. No matter what, Windows is refusing to create any shadow copies anymore. All other drives are working fine by comparison, even the one I did MBR2GPT on.
This issue started after upgrading Windows to a newer version.
Moral of the story: Updating Windows (or any software IMO) is always a mistake. Newer is almost never better.
Also, I'm still getting errors in event viewer about Acronis:
Scheduler failed to run task with GUID '1A7779C8-8294-4740-8160-E7D888EB3738' because of error 2 (Failed to find the file (folder) or the key (value) in the registry.).
No idea how to resolve them without uninstalling Acronis software, cleaning all traces of it possible, and reinstalling; which needless to say I don't want to do.
