Cloning - Larger source disk won't clone to smaller destination disk

Thread needs solution

I have Acronis 9.0 and Acronis 2009 installed on two pc's. I am unable to clone from the larger 120 GB disk to a smaller 80 GB destination drive. I have been doing this until the past weeks. I only have XP SP3 and Acronis on the testing 120 GB hard drive. Has anything changed in Acronis or Windows that will prevent cloning such as this ???

Hi, Lonnie Weaver

It could have something to with how much disk space would  left on the 80gb , it [clone tool] will not allow trying to put more then 80gb on a 80gb HDD.

I don't think it's possible to clone from a larger to a smaller disk. Regardless of how much data is on the source. It's an image copy, not a file copy.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Assuming that the used space on the 120 is no more than about 50 GB or so, you should be able to either clone or restore a backup--either one. However, often times, disk errors will prevent this from happening.

Perform a disk check on the 120
chkdsk c: /R

Boot from the TI Rescue CD.
Use the Acronis Add Disk option and delete the partitions on the 80 so the 80GB is all unallocated space.
The cloning method I recommend is the manual method so you can adjust the partition size--if needed.

I prefer to use the backkup/restore method rather than the clone method due to the risk factor. Check the clone comment in my signature below.

I am trying to clone from a SATA 80GB hard drive to a Seagate "free agent" USB 298GB drive. Clone goes through the moritons and gets to 99% but when it goes the Operatio 4 of 4 "Copy MBR it goes dead in the water. do not want to "Replce the HD just want to have a spare in case. I have watined as much as 15 minutes to allow it to start the copying process but it never does. Any Ideals will be most appreciated.
