Rubbish Serial Number

Thread needs solution

How long before they expect you to type in thousands of random characters to register a product?

The next step will be an individual bar-coded license number that a user will scan in with a cheap USB bar-code reader. The code will only be available to the user as a bar-code, not as an actual number. This will make illegal copying more difficult since the original bar-code will be required to scan before an install will complete. Most folks don't want to share their hard copies of software.

Since it will be coded, it can not only be 64 digits, it could be thousands you mention! Not only that, the software company can make a few dollars selling bar-code readers. :-)

Not really, a bar code is just an automated entry method, it's not in itself secure. You could just scan it into a command prompt and then read what was scanned. It might make entry simpler, but how many people would be prepared to spend even say £10 on a bar code reader so as to not have to type even a 128 character string?

The reality is that its just a one time minor inconvenience mostly for people who buy the boxed version.
Yeah, the serial numbers are long, but it only takes a couple minutes to type it in. Its nothing compared to hours or days spent trying to work out "real" issues or problems.

If you buy it online you can just copy and paste the serial number(s) in.

Acronis even helps by keeping your serial number(s) online and in a downloadable text file, once you register.

Its an inconvenience but lets not make it out to be worse than it is.

[Edited to correct a mistake -- thanks KaiS]

My serial is 71 characters incl. the hyphens. Anyway for "security" reasons such big serials are not necessary - their protection algorithm seems to be crappy - keygenerators for TI are available in numerous places in the net. No clue why they didn't use an Elliptic Curves signature scheme or one that is based on Hidden Field Equations. The serial wouldn't have been even half as long as they are now while providing much higher security.

James;
the reality is that many of use with poor eye sight and or dyslexia, other visual or motor control impairments, can spend an hour on what you say; "it only takes a couple minutes to type it in". Then tthere is the problem with re-installs. In short, you are very wrong. Not only is this an issuye for many of us but it speaks to the point that many corporations do not consider customer satisfaction until they are loosing money. This is an issue microsoft started and who since began to set presidence that simply says "if a customer needs it, he will take what we give".

If you buy the download then it's just a highlight, Ctrl_C to copy and a Ctrl-V to paste.

I am having many problems Starting with getting the Serial Code in. What do I do with it now. I am having problems getting Windows 7 to pickup and start the install for the full vrersion. The Soft ware should not be this hard to install. 99% of the stuff I have put on my computers just goes in. It askes me questions and I answer. I called the corporate office and said that the great ratings this stuff has on rating websites is a great fauls hood. I am pulling my hair out to get this stuff in my computers and working. Acronsis is acting like GM, Ford, and Chrysler just before Honda and Toyata started selling a lot of cars. I just want to buy software, put it in and answer specirfic questions to get it working in my computer. At this point I can not.

James,

At this point, I can not.

Is your issue the input of serial number? As SeekForever mentioned in post #7, you can copy the serial number from an email message, etc and copy it into the clipboard. Then when the software asks for serial number, place the mouse pointer into the serial field and perform a Control V
