Boot by USB flash drive: TI Netbook Edition does not load on ASUS eeePC 1101HA

Thread needs solution

That is not correct. As I indicated, I tried 7zip which is capable of unpacking ISO files. Please read my post again.

I'm sure someone hear would still like a real answer, but I've given up. I could not aford to spend any more time on this, so I was forced to turn to another product (which did not require a special Netbook version and which did work on first attempt in all respects).

Hi Oleg.

I want that ISOLINX file for my Spanish version, but I have no Bootable Media Section when I log into my account. Is there another way to obtain it?

Thanks.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting us.
John,
I have read your post again. To obtain a real answer on why 7zip is unable to open ISO file properly you can contact the appropriate support on this page. Please let us know if you want to continue to troubleshoot the issue.
Juan,
I am sending a Private Message to you.

Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is not clear or you need a further assistance.

Thank you.

The reason that any of the Window unzipping programs are unable to find any files inside of the new iso is that the formatting for the ISO is one of the Linux formats that is not supported by MS. I got the appropriate files out of the ISO by using my Linux file server.

By the way, I did get a working build by using the SYSLINUX procedure. Sometime in the next couple of days, I will post the files that I copied over from the ISO after I manged to be able to read it.

Hello Frank,

Thank you for the provide information.

We are really glad to hear that the program works for you.

Thank you.

Ok,here are the files that I copied over onto the SYSLINUX prepared USB card from the recent ISO Build (TrueImage2010_s_en.iso) that you get by downloading it from the Acronis website:

File                                 Build date

ramdisk.dat                   1/26/2010

kernel.dat                      1/26/2010

My SYSINUX.CFG file looks like this:

----------------------------------------------

timeout 100
default ati
label ati
kernel kernel.dat
append initrd=ramdisk.dat vga=0x314 ramdisk_size=40000 quiet

-----------------------

Now that I think about it, I would also think that you could copy the new files over to a USB flashcard that you prepared with the Acronis software.  That would eliminate the entire SYSLINUX step.  I must point out that I have not tried this to see if it works but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't.

I have read this and other forum threads from start to finish, trying to find out if there is a working and reliable method of restoring my netbook (Toshiba nb204) using Acronis 2010 Home and a USB flash drive.

My impression is that a solution, if it does exist, takes a lot of screwing around with Linux files, which for some of us is just not possible.

All I am looking to do is backup and restore my netbook easily to and from a flash drive, creating new backups maybe once every few days.

If there is a working and reliable method, where can I find it described?

Thanks very much.

Larry

Hi Oleg,

I too noticed this problem when I installed the trial version on my HP Mini 110 earlier today.

I created a bootable USB stick from my PC version of ATI 2010 as suggested by Chris F and that runs fine.

How can I test that the new ISO file will work OK on my netbook before purchasing a copy, if I choose to do so?

Hope this makes sense!

Thanks
Steven

Hello all,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help.

Larry,
According to our database, you are an owner of Acronis True Image Home 2010 license. The issues described in this thread are related to Acronis True Image Home 2010 Netbook Edition. Have you tried to create Acronis Bootable Media by means of Acronis Media Builder? If yes, please describe the abnormal behavior.
Steven,
If you purchase additionally the Acronis True Image Home 2010 Netbook Edition license, you can use the USB stick created with  Acronis True Image Home 2010 for the disaster recovery.
Nevertheless, I am sending the appropriate ISO file to you via Private Messages. Please try it and

Hi Oleg,

Thanks very much for the PM containing the link to the new ISO file.

I have copied it over to my USB drive on which I am using Grub4DOS. I get the Acronis menu of boot options (1-8), then if I leave it to boot on its own it loads ramdisk.dat, then I get the same error as John_A (unsurprising as we both have a HP Mini 110!):

Undefined video mode number: 317

I see from an earlier link that you posted that this corresponds to a screen resolution of 1024x768, but I would have thought that nearly all netbooks run at 1024x600 like mine does.

I can select 800x600x32bit (mode 315) manually and True Image loads OK, but it's a bit of a pain having to do this! I suppose it would only happen in a disaster situation, but can the ISO file not be modified in some way to run at 1024x600 to start with?

I also got another error, something about 'error while loading shared libraries', but it doesn't seem to have affected the loading of the program?

Any further assistance from you or other more experienced forum members than me would be appreciated!

Thanks again
Steven

Hello Steven,

Thank you for posting, I will be happy to help.
Actually, to avoid the manual setup of the screen resolution you should use Acronis Bootable Media created with Acronis Media Builder. Acronis Bootable Media doesn't work for several of our customers, and we are working to create a fix. The fix will be implemented for the next released build (the exact date of the release is unknown). Therefore, selecting mode 315 manually is considered to be a temporal solution.
Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.
If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other question do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.
Thank you.

It's quite old but I just wonder if there was any solution of this thread....

On my Acer Aspire One D250 I have the same issue. Booting with the USB works until (for one second only) the messages appear:

No RAID disks
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
No volume groups found
No volume groups found
No volume groups found

Then the screen turns to black and only the Caps LED is blinking. Only way to bring the Netbook back to life again is to press the power button and hold it for a few seconds.

I've spent all my Sunday with this *grrrr* and now I've sent already a support request for my registered TI. Let's see...

Hello Wolfgang,

Thank you for taking time to contact us.

The issue is already fixed, the fix will be available in the next released build of the program (the exact time frame of the new build release is unknown)..

Meanwhile, you can place an ISO file to a flash drive using SYSLINUX.

You can find the information on how to download the appropriate ISOLINUX file in this article

So, please download the file from your account and place the SYSLINUX boot loader onto USB falsh drive to make it bootable.

Please let us know the results, we should be sure that the program runs flawlessly. If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other questions do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.
Thank you.

Hello Oleg

Thanks *a lot* for your answer. I'm very happy about it because meanwhile I am completely mad about the German Support.
They told me that depending on the processor only Netbooks mentioned here: http://kb.acronis.com/content/4245 are supported. My Acer Aspire One D250 runs with a Intel® Atom™ N270 (which is supported) but they just tell that my processor is not supported.... I really feel fooled.

Before trying to create a USB-stick according to your hint one question. With F11 and the parameter "acpi=off noapic" it boots well with my USB stick. The only problem is that at the end after "Attached scsi generic sg1 type 0" nothing happens anymore (see the screenshot attached). But I can enter commands at the command prompt and the PC responds properly. So could I start the recovery program manually perhaps?

Thanks again for your help!

Wolfgang

Hello Wolfgang,

Thank you for your response.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you experienced because of the mistake made by our agent, we will do our best to prevent this situation from happening in future.

If you press F11, you start a standalone version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 Netbook Edition that differs only slightly from the complete version.  This option is called Acronis Startup Recovery Manager, and it is not located on your flash drive (just to be sure that we are speaking about the same things) .

So, I please unplug the flash drive and try to use the F11 option again (the program stopped after reading the flash drive). If it stops at the same moment, try to hit Enter.

After the command prompt appearance type  /bin/product

We are awaiting for the results. Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is not clear or you need a further assistance.

Thank you.

Hello Oleg

Thanks for your fast answer! I'm a bit a dumbass at the moment, so please let me clarify/ask again. You write

"... This option is called Acronis Startup Recovery Manager, and it is not located on your flash drive (just to be sure that we are speaking about the same things) ..."

To be sure: I'm booting from the USB stick so I assume that whatever program I'm running must also be on the stick (since the netbook HD is not yet accessed)...

But anyhow, I tried what you suggested. I booted again with the USB stick. On the Acronis Menu I removed the stick and pressed F11 where I entered as usual "acpi=off noapic". Then I started the Acronis True Image Home (full version) Option. But now without the stick I got the message: "the program cannot be run. To proceed press ..." (translated roughly from German).

Then I started over with the whole procedure and with the USB plug inside, F11 etc. and at the end of all the messages at the command prompt I typed " /bin/product". This resulted in the same behaviour like in the beginning: a dead netbook with a blinking caps LED.

So for me this actually means that I don't have a problem with booting from the USB stick but the "/bin/product" crashes the netbook, right?
Btw: does this command mean that a program called "product" in a directory "bin" shall be started? I'm just asking because on the stick there's only a directory "Recovery Manager" and no "bin".

Thanks again

Wolfgang

Hi Oleg

Good News!!!! Your solution with the Syslinux did work!!!! (okay, please also read my P.S.)

THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR HELP!

Especially because I'm so happy about your personnel support please don't get me wrong now. It's more addressed to your management (if you want to give feedback what customers think to them).

The building of a good company's reputation and a good name costs billions of dollars. But what's going on here means that Acronis burns money and might ruin the company one day.

First the German support doesen't help at all and each useless answer takes one day (without you, Oleg, I would have thrown True Image out of the window and never bought any product of Acronis anymore). Regarding the German support I really feel like I am fooled by them...

Second the solution that did work for me did cost me a lot of time. And to be honest I doubt that an average user is able to follow all these steps (even I was a bit confused what to do with the ISO, because you can't burn it to an USB stick).

Third I think the solution could be done much easier providing a slight update of True Image where this can be done automatically. I just don't understand why they dit not provide an emergency update monthes before because I read also in other forums that many people struggle.

But anyhow, me personally I'm glad now that I found an Angel like you and also I can use True Image Home 2010 Netbook Edition on my Aspire One D250.

Thanks again!

Wolfgang

P.S. I have to be honest. Even with Syslinux it doesen't work with the two files kernel.dat and ramdisk_merged.dat from the Netbook edition (same behaviour, dead machine and blinking caps LED).
Instead I had to copy these two files from a True Image 2010 Home version (not the Netbook edition) I had to get from a warez site (you guys from Acronis force me into criminality *ggg*!!!). With these two files on the USB stick - voila, it works! ;-)

Hello Wolfgang,

Thank you very much for expressing appreciation. I am really glad to hear that the issue has been resolved.

In the next released build you will be able to create a bootable USB flash drive by Acronis Media Builder, i.e. you will be able to avoid using SYSLINUX. Actually, we wanted to release a new build earlier, but we had to return it to our developers for improvement because of some technical issues (as you could see by yourself, several critical issues have been resolved only partially).

We are planning to make the update procedure for Acronis Bootable Media easier, I can't share the details about the technical side and the exact time frame, but the procedure will become more user friendly. We are working on it, and we expect that our customers will like the results.

We will do our best to improve the level of technical support. I will submit a request to the appropriate staff, your complaint will be taken into consideration by our management.

Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is not clear or you need a further assistance.

Thank you.

Hello all,

I would like to update this thread with some additional information.

We are still working on this issue and I will update this thread once a fix is available.

Thank you very much for your patience.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Hi you guys from Acronis
I´m so glad that you work on this. Because the German support is that lazy and unfriendly.
They do not even TRY to help. First they said it´s because of the netbooks processor and when I told them that it´s the standard Atom N270 they said well, then my netbook, the Acer Aspire One D250 (one of the most common netbooks!), is not supported and I must buy the notebook edition (instead of the netbook edition).
Isn´t that bullshit? I really feel fooled by them....

Having read through all 70 posts on this issue it might be helpful to list the netbooks named above on which the Acronis True Image Netbook Edition is reported to have problems.

Asus Eee PC 1101HA
Asus Eee PC 1005HA
Asus Eee PC 1005HAB
Asus Eee PC 1001HA (my own netbook)
HP Mini 1006TU
HP Mini 110-1000
Packard Bell KAV60
Packard Bell (unnamed model)
Toshiba NB204
Acer Aspire One D250

In addition, on another thread on the forum http://forum.acronis.com/forum/7349 , it is reported that the Netbook Edition crashes on these two models of netbooks:

Asus EeePC 1000HE
Dell Inspirion 1720

That's netbooks from six different brands.

Of course, there may be others, too, that have not been named in this thread. Most people will just give up on the software rather than try to make it work with help from a technical forum.

To reiterate the issue that was first raised in this thread in October 2009, although the software appears to make backups successfully, the software for creating a bootable USB memory stick for recovery from a hard disc failure does not work.

The Acronis moderators have been saying that a new release is imminent for a while but when I downloaded the trial version on 10 June 2010, the software still didn't work, eight months after the issue was first reported. It seems surprising that a product targetted specifically at netbooks does not work on such a long list of netbooks.

Could the Acronis moderator give an update on whether a working version is likely to be released soon? In particular, I have a trial version which does not work. It will expire in 30 days. When the new release is available, will I be able to download a new trial version in order to test whether the problem has really been fixed?

Hello all!

Thank you for your comments and for the information provided! I have just received a reply from the experts team, and they would like to ask you to test the latest media uploaded to your accounts. Please create a Bootable Media with it and perform the following steps:

1. hit <Enter> key when the following messages displayed:

$/bin/sh
$SCSI 5:0:0:0: Direct-Access SanDisk Cruzer Mini 0.4 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2
$sd 5:0:0:0: [sdb] 1000944 512-byte hardware sectors (512 MB)
$sd 5:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off
$sd 5:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
$sd 5:0:0:0: [sdb] 1000944 512-byte hardware sectors (512 MB)
$sd 5:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off
$sd 5:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
sdb: sdb1
$sd 5:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
$sd 5:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg1 type 0

2. Start booting from USB without 'quiet' parameter and remove the flash itself when kernel and ramdisk are loaded into RAM (you can wait 2-3 seconds after dots and remove flash).

3. Check how the latest bootable components work. It is better to use ISO image with CD drive, but if there is no way to use CD drive you can just update bootable components

We really appreciate your cooperation and patience. We are going to include the fix to the next build and need to know whether these bootable components are working properly.

Thank you in advance, we will be waiting for news from you.

Same here (LAN & WLAN was enough). Recovering from Partition2. But a pitty they never released a new version, which allows this F11-boot without first disabling these all...
