How to Keep DVD Tray Closed After Backup

Thread needs solution

Hi All,

TI-2010 Build 7,160
Win 7 x64

A scheduled backup to DVD runs in the middle of the night. The DVD tray opens after completion of the backup, leaving the DVD burner and media exposed to dust, etc.

Could someone please tell me how to prevent the DVD tray from opening after completion of the backup? I cannot find an option to do this. If the answer is to use the option to run a task after backup, please describe in detail how to do this, as I do not have script experience.

Thanks!

If you are using a Laptop, I am not aware of any tool which will do this.

However, if your computer is a desktop, I have a suggestion which might work. It works with XP Pro but I do not know whether it will work with Windows 7.

It is an external burner with full tray functionality. I welcome your suggestion; please advise.

Thanks!

Here is something you can try. This should work on a desktop computer but will probably NOT work on a laptop. This works on an XP Pro desktop. I believe it will work on an external DVD player but I am unable to test.

1. Download wizmo.exe from the link below
http://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm

2. and place the downloaded wizmo.exe file into the c:\windows folder

3. Copy this command into Notepad (Anywhere X is used, change X to your DVD drive letter)
C:\WINDOWS\WIZMO.EXE CLOSE=X:

4. Save the Notepad file as
C:\WINDOWS\CLOSETRAYX.CMD

5. Inside the Acronis task backup options, open the Pre-post command options. and follow the example.
Click on A: to enable the Custom Command options.
Click on B: to open the Command window.

Click on C: to open the Browse window.
Browse to the location where you saved the Notepad cmd file
such as the Windows folder. Once you locate the CloseTrayx.cmd file, then select the file by double clicking on the file. This action should cause the file to appear in Window D.

Open the DVD tray and then click on E: to test whether your command file will close the tray.
If successful, then click on F: to save the Pre/post setup. If test does not succeed, retrace your steps for corrections.)
Click and select the upper tab labelled "Backup Schemes"
Click OK to save your changes.
Save your task.
--------------------------------------------------
Note: You can save the Notepad file to any location you wish but just be sure and browse (item C) to the revised location to select the file. Item D must point to the correct location in order for the test to succeed. You cold also save the Wizmo to another location as long as you change the path in the cmd file.

The save to location for Notepad could even be desktop icon which you use any time you wish to closed the tray. Wizmo can also open the tray from a desktop shortcut. Most optical devices has a right click eject option so the desktop shortcut to close the tray can be an asset.

Let me know your results. I would encourage you to use an external hard drive for storage of your backups. Using a DVD backup which consists of more than one disc can be a real nuisance in switching disc. Be sure and test your restore procedures and make sure they work.

Thank you, Grover; that is just what I needed.

For whatever reason, ATI 2010 does not seem to want to pass the "open=x:" parameter value if the "after backup process" command is set up as a script (.CMD). No matter what I did, Wizmo would open itself in "help" mode, just as the behavior is if you simply double-click on Wizmo.exe. However, Wizmo works just fine as an ATI "after backup process" command if you simply enter the executable path (e.g., "c:\windows\wizmo.exe") in your position "D" above and then enter the parameter value "open=x:" in the "arguments" field.

Many thanks!

Bruce

Thanks for letting us know the final results.
