TIH 12 Error popup "failed to open (initialize) the computer." and failing to recognise any source disk

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have just installed this on a ThinkPad T61 notebook with Win XP/SP3, but it's practically unusable. Main problem is it doesn't seem to see my C: drive as a source disk when I try Disk and Partition Backup. The Source disk box is empty and I can't select either a disk or a partition as the source. On the other hand I CAN select the C: (160 GB internal/system hard drive) or D: (1 TB USB2 hard drive) disk as the destination drive even though I can't specify anything as a source.

Also if I click on Clone Disk or Mount Image in the Tools section, I get an error popup that says "failed to open (initialize) the computer." plus a whole lot of other stuff. A screen shot is attached. Also attached is a System Report (that bit seemed to work). Another bit that seemed to work was to create bootable media. I succeeded in doing that on a 4 GB USB thumb drive and it boots okay, but navigation on the recovery booted system is painful. I can get the menu selections to go up and down but can't execute anything (doesn't respond to Enter or any other execution key I can think of!).

I had uninstalled previous Acronis software (acronis true image echo workstation) and rebooted, installed the TIH 12 software and it insisted on rebooting again which I did. When I got the errors mentioned above I tried doing a repair of the system and rebooted. but had the same problem. So I uninstalled TIH 12 again and rebooted. Then ran CCleaner to remove the rubbish temp files and also ran it to remove any old registry entries.. Reinstalled TIH12 and rebooted (yet again) but still have the same probs.

Hope you can help. I got a 3-license seat, this is my second one. The first one I tried on another laptop (Toshiba Satellite T230) running Win7/SP1 which works just fine so far.

Paul,

Have you tried running a repair install of 2012?

Did you try running the Acronis cleaner?

Colin,

Thanks for the quick response. It was very helpful, actually! Yes I had tried a repair, but that didn't fix the problem (as stated in my OP). Didn't know about the Acronis Cleaner apps, even after reading and searching the forums and other self-help material, until I saw your response. So I searched on that and downloaded the relevant programs. Ran those and rebooted, and then reinstalled Acronis TIH 12 and rebooted, and now it's working as intended (or as expected anyway!). Running a backup now. Thanks for the pointer.
Regards,
Paul
