Acronis True Image 2012 Activation
Will I lose an activation if I erase the hard drive that has Acronis True Image 2012 installed and activated with Drive Cleanser? The activation limit is one PC. What hardware components make up the hardware ID used for activation in True Image 2012? Will a reinstallation be considered a new PC after an erase and reformat?
Hello Keith, in such cases you will be able to move licenses from these lost/broken computer to the new one in the web interface, so no worries here.
If you install a new OS on the same computer (no hardware change), you will not need to move licenses or anything. The software will get re-activated automatically.
Since the Plus Pack supports restoring on dissimilar hardware, what happens in this case? Will ATI2012 deactivate itself automatically and we have to call Acronis to reactivate?

I meant reinstalling the same OS version on the same computer, not a new OS version.
When yo reinstall ati you will need to activate again but once onlline it should allow you to complte activation.
Is the hard drive serial number in the SMART data part of the activation mechanism?

I have the plus pack specifically for this because I upgrade every year, but I don't want to reinstall everything. How does it judge how many licenses I'm using? Do I need to deactivate ATI2012 on the old machine first and then activate on the new one? If so, how do I deactivate?

In case you reinstall you just need to reactivate. Reactivation is easy, you can do it from the UI. There is no need to call support.

Funny This should come up. I recently got a chance to test "Restore to dissimilar hardware." I restored a backup of Windows Vista 32 bit from dead computer (motherboard blew its capacitors...) to a new home built with VERY "dissimilar hardware." Since Windows Vista knows about SATA drives, i didn't add anything extra for drivers beyond the default.
The restored HDD image booted on the first try. I needed to add display drivers and such (brand new motherboard), and then a fistful of applications immediatly demanded reactivation, including windows.
To be fair, all reactivations went through automatically over the internet without any special intervention.

That was our main goal. we do not handle universal restore somehow, but we made reactivation very simple.
