how to test clone on USB drive

Thread needs solution

Previously I cloned my Win XP system onto a removable drive. In order to test it, I unplugged the internal drive and plugged the clone into the same location.

Now I have Win 7 64 bit and a USB hard drive for clones. I made the clone but cannot get the system to work from the cloned drive. I tried going to the BIOS and changing the boot order so the USB is first, nope. Then I tried disabling the internal hard drive in the BIOS, and setting the USB as first, nope. Then I unplugged the internal, still nope.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Kris,

It is practically impossible to boot Windows from a USB disk. It is possible to have a USB disk become bootable and boot into a Windows image or in WinPE but it is not the configuration you get when you either clone an internal disk to a USB or your backup an internal disk to a USB.

If you want to test clone, clone to a disk that you put where the source is, put your source in an external enclosure, boot on the recovery CD and clone this way. Then disconnet the external enclosure and boot the computer up.

If you want to backup your system disk, backup to your UBS disk. Then, restore using the recovery CD.
