End user restore w. minimal interaction

Thread needs solution

Hi.

Is it possible to have ASD configured to restore a laptop with this method:

Plug computer to service network
Insert bootable USB-stick
Boot machine
Pull USB-stick after no-hands-on restore and auto shutdown
Done

For this to work with ASD I would set up an isolated gigabit service network with a Windows/PXE/ASD server.

Picture a small school department with 20 laptops for loan. These laptops need to have there installation updated say once a month with new applications (tech job). They also need to be restored to there original state when they come back from leasing to teachers and students (end user job). The lease time will vary and be a couple of weeks.

Considering restore mechanism such as Deep Freeze I turn to ASD as a way for deployment and restore in one package.

Is there functionality in ASD to accomplish the minimal interaction method you think?

OK, I'll answer my own question with what I've figured out: It seems that a Event Driven Job gets "consumed" when done and can not be made "sticky". So, this approach doesn't seem to cut it.
Setting a scheduled wol-task to run every day tough seems a good solution given that the user manages to plug in the laptops to the network.

Any other ideas is much appreciated!

Hello Per,

Thank you for your post. I will certainly help you with your question.

I would recommend to use Custom Deployment (user initiated deployment). This way you can load a number of templates and as the remote machine boots to the bootable media or the PXE Server you can either, select a specific deployment template or set it up so that the template loads automatically.

We have a detailed explanation of this process on page 83 from our user guide and if you have additional questions please let me know.

Thank you.
