ATIH 2012 File Backup - I can't turn off folders in file backup

Thread needs solution

I just upgraded to ATIH 2012 from 2011. I am running Windows 7 Professional. I do a weekly backup to DVD that contains only the files I can not afford to lose. I store this disk off site for safety. The files are stored in the My Documents folder. I turn off the folders with stuff less important files, like videos and photos to reduce the size of the backup. When I have picked everything I want to save, ATIH shows an estimate of 175 MB. When I do the backup, the file created is almost 13 GB. When I review the backup file, I find all the folders I turned off are backed up! In other words, the whole My Documents folder is backed up, which includes the photos and videos I turned off in the beginning.

ATIH 2011 didn't do this, so it seems there is an issue with the file backup in the 2012 version.

Is there a solution to this problem?

Thanks in advance for your replys.

ncpgmr,

THis is a known issue with ATI 2012. Try the following workarounds:
- deselect the My Documents folder and select only the sub-folders you want, OR
- create a new category pointing at my Documents.

Let us know which one works for you.

I would also suggest that if the files are that important, that you use two different methods and programs to create copies of these important files. One method would be to use your burn program and burn copies of these files onto the DVD or CD in their original format. This would enable you to recover the files simply by dragging the files from the CD to your hard drive.

I am not implying that TI does not work but am implying your need to have a plan-b if plan-a does not work.

Hi Pat.

Thank you for your reply. Before my post, I did exactly what you described and found it worked. However, to get the files in the My Documents root folder that are not located in a sub-folder, I have to choose My Documents root folder first, then turn off what I don't want backed up. That is where the problem shows up. Yes, I could move all the files in the My Documents root folder into another sub-folder, then back up that sub-folder. However, in ATI 2011, I didn't have to do that.

Please describe what you mean by "create a new category pointing at My Documents".

Thanks again.

Thank you for your reply. The backup I described is only part of my backup routine. I also do a weekly backup of everything to a 2TB external drive - about 40 GB total. Occasionally, I use PowerArchiver to create a ZIP file that I burn to DVD. That way I can retrieve a file using only Windows Explorer. I also have Carbonite backing up to the cloud continuously. I hope all of this is enough when something bad happens! This is quite a change from when I used to swap 360k 5-1/4 floppies back in the DOS days!

Thanks again for the advice.

Kevin,

Do you get any error messages?

Did you have a Plus Pack installed with 2011? If so it will need to be uninstalled before attempting to install 2012.
