Acronis true image 11 home stops responding

Thread needs solution

Hi Peter. good suggestion, sort of. if I unplug from the network, I don't get the "not responding" issue with the 30 sec plus wait every time I need to make a selection. However, when I wanted to change the destination from the ones that Acronis found and listed (I put in a new drive with more space), i could not use help because for that i need an internet connection. If i had known the limitations of this upgrade or rather DOWNGRADE, I would not have put out the money. i am really disappointed in a program I had come to trust on the too many occasions, especially with vista, when my system just failed for no discernible and correctable reason.
I have reported this problem to Acronis [ ref:00D3Zcb.5005BUYCS:ref]. NO HELP as yet just a request to give them more information.

Peter your suggestion works if I turn on my other computer with the mapped drive I can get all my drives displayed in the destination
window and point the destination to anywhere. But if I turn of the other computer on the network I getslock ups when trying to get
to the destination window. I was kind of reluctant to load 6597 after all the trouble but at least that gets it a step further.
I made two disk backups entire disk backups under the other two versions it says one of them is corrupt.

Yana Peters suggestion seems to work

Charles
Thanks for informing me that it now works using that "work around " That is good to know .
I found that once I had all my network going I then pointed to the drive I wanted to back up to and everything worked for a back up while I had all my network on .
Then if I turned off my network I could not change any of my setting because I then got the message "not responding " BUT THE BACK UP STILL WORKED --BINGO -the 'WORKAROUND WORKED AGAIN WHEN I AGAIN TURNED ON ALL MY NETWORK .

I would think that this feature has not been tested by the Acronis alpha or beta testers

ANYONE ELSE TRIED THIS ???

Peters Solution works you have to have your network drives on . If you turn them back off
you are back to the same situation. But the earlier version 5519 did not have this problem.

Charles Jutkins wrote:

I've noted this before, but thought it appropriate to do so again. I had this problem in build 5519 as well, but to a much lesser degree. One example: On a current scheduled backup listed under "My backups" if I try to change the backup destination location (Operations -> Edit Backup Settings -> Destination -> Browse) I have similar problems when trying to browse to network locations.

For instance, my My Documents folder points to a location on my NAS. If I click Documents in the browse window it takes 10+ seconds before that location is available, and it indicates this directory has no files or sub-folders - which isn't correct.

Another example... The browse window does not indicate the network locations I have available in the "Computer" location in my file explorer which are accessed by IP address, but the window does find my NAS by name. My network isn't properly set up to use names, so doing so is problematic. The only way I can access a share on the NAS by IP address is by entering the entire path directly into the File Name field in the browse window thusly: \\192.168.1.118\share\ . But when I do that a window pops up indicating credentials are being checked. This window stops me from doing anything else in ATI, and it can take 4-5 MINUTES before an "Authentications Settings" window takes its place, requesting a user name and password. Unfortunately, this window pops up even when accessing share which uses NO credentials! If I simply click on connect with the default login info it fails. The interface does not If I leave the user name and password fields blank and click on test connection it fails. If I make up some user name and password and click connect it fails. However, if I make up some user name and password then click on "test connection" and wait for another 4-5 minutes THEN click on Connect it will sometimes work. I have to fiddle and fiddle to access backup locations on the NAS and it takes an excruciatingly long time due to, it would appear, being forced to enter credentials on a share which requires no credentials.

I never reported these issues with 5519 because I didn't want to have to deal with runaround and finally just gave up on using network locations as destinations for images. I had similar issues with Symantec's product though not to this degree, so I guess I was used to it. Dismayed to learn ATI had similar issues, but used to it. I've just been hoping that at some point an update would let me either access network shares directly with IP addresses or list network locations in the "browse for" field or access the same network locations directly which show up in the "computer" area of the file explorer window.

Note: If I browse to the name of the network device instead of trying to access it via the IP address it finds the share with no problems and doesn't ask for credentials to connect.

Anyway, I only post this information to indicate issues trying to access network shares in ATI Home 2011 build 5519.

Solution?

I have read about the incompatibility between Acronis Nonstop Backup and Antivir Antivirus, but since I don't use Acronis NSB I wasn't concerned at all - even though I use Antivir Antivirus (and have been a happy customer of theirs for several years.)

In preparing my system to be able to supply the information Yana has requested, I uninstalled Avira Antivir and and ATI 2011 Home build 5519. I installed ATI 2011 Home build 6597 and just for grins checked it out. I quickly noticed a difference in the GUI for ATI Home 2011 build 6597. It seemed to be working just fine, none of the problems previously reported.

I downloaded the latest version of Antivir Antivirus, v10.0.0.609 and installed it. The installation went through with no problems and notified me a system reboot was necessary. I rebooted the system and soon met with a Win7 screen indicating changes were being made to the system and to not turn it off. (Something similar.)

After 15 mins of watching this screen with no apparent hard drive activity I performed a physical shutdown of my system using the power button. Upon reboot I was informed the system had not been properly shutdown, but I continued booting in normal mode.

I had no problems booting. At this point Avira Antivir seemed to be installed and working just fine, but I immediately noticed a change in ATI Home 2011 build 6597. Though the GUI wasn't quite the snail fest as it has been, there was definitely a pronounced difference. It was slow again.

I uninstalled Avira Antivir and after the reboot uninstalled ATI. I rebooted then reinstalled ATI 2011 Home build 6597, along with Plus Pack. I'm currently running my computer without Avira Antivir, or any antivirus program, and so far my testing of ATI 2011 Home build 6597 has shown me no inconsistencies, slowing, pauses, crashing or difficulties accessing network shares.

I'll continue to test for a few days and will report back with any anomalies, but so far it would seem that the Acronis vs Avira issue is much deeper than just Acronis Nonstop Backup.

So after a few days of testing I'll have to decide if True Image or Antivir is more important to me, and I'll have to eat the cost of the other? I see posts in the forum that Acronis has, at least in the past, worked with Avira in an attempt to find a resolution. It's been a handful of months now and I'm not clear as to whether this is even a concern at all anymore.

I most definitely want to know if anyone else reporting similar issues with ATI Home 2011 build 6597 has Avira Antivir installed AT ALL, even if the "live" protection is not even enabled - as was the case with me.

I started playing with the program this morning and I am encountering additional problems. Its very slow to go to the main screen when selected and when I select Disk and Partition back up it does not show a location in the destination window and when I try to select it the screen goes light and it locks up. It seems to work with the existing backups jobs that were already generated in the other versions . By the way how do you do and Incremental or Differential backup I see no way to select it.

@Charles Jutkins
What anti virus program are you running, out of curiosity?

Incremental/Differential: Main Screen -> disk and partition backup -> Backup scheme -> Custom scheme -> Backup method. Pick either incremental or differential from this drop down box.

Norton Antivirus it comes with a comcast subscription

Also the problem I had earlier was my printer not being turned on as its a network device with memory.

Ahh, good 'ole NAV... I have Comcast as well, but just can't bring myself to use NAV even though it's offered for free. I mean, the biggest reason I went with Acronis is to get rid of Norton's competing product so I wouldn't have to ever deal with that company again. But I won't get into that here. I guess I was just hoping that maybe you used Antivir (free) 'cuz then it might mean that my latest experience isn't just a fluke.

As far as your network printer? That seems WEIRD. Just for giggles, I'm turning off my network printer right now. K, quick test of ATI Home 2011 build 6597...

It's working just as well for me with the network printer off as it was working for me this morning...

While I'm testing, though I concerned this may cause something to blow up in my face, I'm going to unplug my NAS. One sec... K, unplugged... Going to attempt to open ATI now.

The program's main screen loaded up just fine. I clicked "disk and partition backup" to start a new backup and the resulting screen opened immediately. I clicked Destination -> Browse and had a hangup with "program not responding" for a good 30 seconds. Closed that window and tried again, Destination -> Browse. Quick as a fox - no apparent problems. I might expect this type of behavior, unlike what I've described before.

I plugged the NAS back in and without restarting ATI I tested the program in the same manner as described above. It took a minute or so before ANY (including any which weren't connected) network locations or shorcuts showed up again, but there were no hangups within ATI. And once the network locations showed back up I could freely and quickly browse through their shares with no problems.

It seems I have found the root to my problem. Though I'll keep testing, my problem seems to have been caused by running both ATI and Antivir. If this is the case, I don't know if it's Acronis or Avira who's to blame, but since an upgraded version of Acronis to build 6597 made things worse I'd lean toward the Acronis software actually causing the problem.

@Charles Jutkins
I'd be curiuos if anything would change for you if you uninstalled Norton Antivirus and tested things out if, that is, you're still having any slow-down problems.

Same symptoms, Home 2011 build 6597 GUI Very slow, long waits when "Edit Backup Settings" ...etc.

I tried everything possible to fix, but I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT and now GUI is working great, no slowness.

My problem was my Brother Inkjet printer had a USB Removable Device (I) drive showing in My Computers. When I went to System Administration and removed the Drive letter (I) the device went away and then Acronis started running like it was designed. Evidently the GUI at certain points was scanning devices and "hanging" on the USB device. Acronis needs to fix code the scans Removable USB devices to validate they are usable devices, rather than hanging. .>>Good Luck All !

It looks like this issue is caused by several different or a combination of serveral different things. What a mess...

My latest update is it seems I've found a way to run Acronis Home 2011 build 6597 alongside the latest version of Avira Antivir with no apparent problems. I'll continue to monitor these threads, and I'll post more if I start seeing issues again.

After I uninstalled the Avira software and learned ATI seemed to be working perfectly I decided to try installing Avira again. If you've read my previous post(s) in this thread you'll know that last time I tried this and rebooted my computer, Win7 advised something about "updates are being applied to your computer don't shut off the power," something like that. That screen hung for 15+ mins with no apparent hard drive activity. And when I forced a power off and rebooted, the problems with ATI had returned. I uninstalled Avira again and ATI had been fine since.

So I decided to try installing Avira again, this time with a twist. Before I installed Avira I stopped all processes and services I could find related to ATI (I think I found two of each), but left the program installed. I then installed Avira Antivir. When I rebooted, I did NOT get the Windows shutdown screen indicating that changes were being applied.

After the reboot and ever since, Avira Antivir (v10.0.0.609) and ATI Home 2011 build 6597 seem to be playing nice. I have none of the "slowdown" and "lockup" issues with ATI I (and others) have been reporting. (I've noted a little slowness with ATI when accessing network shares through the program while connected remotely to the computer, but it's only 10 seconds or so and isn't a big problem - probably not directly related to the issue at hand.) I am concerned that if I update either ATI or Avira I may run into the problem again, but we'll see.

So, what could cause this? Both programs have access to system files - perhaps one program is using a library file or the like and when the other program tries to write a new version of the library file it causes problems because it's in use? I have no clue - this is above my head, but that was the sort of reasoning which led me down this path.

Hi Peter,

I work in the IT industry and completely understand software development issues. The problem here was that there was a reasonably stable version 5519 that was superseded by a later version 6597 just before Christmas. Unfortunately 6597 had some serious issues but all the developers were away on Christmas holidays and are only now just noticing the problem.

The problems with 6597 are major and have gone on way too long without comment by Acronis. My data is way too precious to experiment with I'm afraid. As I said earlier, TIH2009 works and I'm sticking with it until I am forced to upgrade for technical reasons (e.g. software incompatibility). It is a shame as I do like to keep up with the latest.

Hello Yana,

I am having the same problem. ATI 2011 build 6597 impossible to use. After deleting unconnected network drives I experienced some improvement, but still very slow. I just filed a supported request (case 01028037).

I have the same problem as others on this forum with Acronis True Image Home build 6597 running on Win 7 64 bit. I could do a complete backup of C drive but whenever I tried to do just a File backup of something and I tried to select a drive and some folders, it would run very, very slowly and then end up crashing the program.

I read in other threads on this forum about the problems card readers could cause so I went into Device Manager and disabled all my card reader drives and rebooted. I opened TIH and proceeded to try a File backup and it worked. No more slow running or crashing, although the little spinning circle in the “Estimating Size” section that indicates it is thinking doesn’t ever stop spinning, even when an estimated size does appear.

I have a case in with Acronis as I'm still in my 30 window for free support. I have gotten 2 responses back from them asking for information and suggesting possible fixes. They also seem to think that "there are conflicts due to Acronis product's drivers and the other drivers on the machine."

So far the issue hasn't been resolved but they are working on it. I've got my fingers crossed. Up till now I have been very happy with earlier versions TIH and I hope they can resolve this soon.

I'll keep everyone updated as my case goes forward.

If you have a printer attached to your router on an Ethernet port even that is can be seen as mapped drive . I don't know what else is considered a mapped drive device but it looks like it all has to be turned on.

I am posting a followup to the issue I discovered regarding an incompatibility with Acronis True Image 2011 Home and Avira Antivirus and posted about earlier in this thread. I am aware of the previosly known incompatibility with Antivir, as I have posted above in this same thread.

In a previous post I noted a way I was able to get ATI and Antivir to play well together. I have an unfortunate update to report: After Antivir updatd itself ATI went back to having the same issues, though admittedly not quite as bad.

I uninstalled Avira Antivir, and just like before, ATI started behaving splendidly. I fiddled around with ATI just to make sure it was operating appropriately before installing the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials to see if it would work properly with ATI.

ATI slowed to a crawl again. And when I tried to connect to a network share through the ATI GUI, after waiting for a very long time, the box popped up requiring network credentials to connect to a share with no credentials needed. This box doesn't even pop up when ATI is installed with no antivirus software!

I uninstalled Microsoft Security Essentials, and wouldn't you know it. ATI is performing like a champ. Even before a reboot of my system!

I'm beginning to form a hypothesis that ATI is not playing nicely with antivirus software in general.

EDIT:
I want to point out that I am on a network and, though I've indicated it in previous posts, that I was able to get ATI running more appropriate even with Avira Antivir (specifically) installed if I completely disabled the network by unplugging the network cable from my computer. I was also, as posted previously, able to get ATI (I don't use Nonstop Backup) and Antivir working together ok with my network enabled until Antivir updated itself by following specific steps I outlined in a prevous post.

As promised, here's an update on my case. My case was sent up the ladder to the "expert team." They acknowledge the problem are are working on it. This is part of the last e mail I received from them.

"I'm a representative of Acronis Customer Central's expert team. I was assigned your case to work with and received all necessary information for further investigation. I have studied your case carefully and found that the nature of the problem with file backup is clear for now but there is no universal fix at this moment. In my view, we're experiencing the driver conflict and this should be observed at the development level. I would like to assure you that the problem will be solved anyway and it shouldn't take long. In order to resolve the issue, I'm currently creating a task for our QA department so that our testing team will analyze the data and provide the solution for your issue in the final stage of investigation. I cannot tell about the exact time when the initial results of investigation will be available, but for now let us stick to the 15 of March when I will update you on your case. Most probably, I will receive the information earlier, in this case I will inform you immediately."

@John Terpstra
Thank you for keeping us informed. I don't know if this particular solution (on their part) will address the issue I'm having since all I need to do is uninstall my antivirus software (MS, Avira & AVG tested so far) and things work nearly perfectly, but I'd guess it would at least address the issue I'm having of the network in ATI's browse window dissappearing at seemingly random times.

And as an update to my specific issue after a day with MS Security Essentials installed alongisde ATI, the problem with unresponsiveness does not go away after all if I wait before accessing the network from within ATI. (I guess seeing that result in previous testing was just a fluke.) It is, however, not NEAR the problem as when I have Antivir installed. I don't get "program not responding" notices at least.

Again, just to be clear, responsiveness returns if I uninstall the av software. /sigh

For me the "workaround" solves the problem. Namely, I make sure all my network referenced drives on computers that at that moment are not turned on in my home network, are disconnected from "My Computer" before I open ATI. Then the program does not stall when I select drives to work with. I do not seem to have a conflict with my anti virus program, Norton 360. I only noticed this problem after I installed "Plus Pack." Unfortunately for me, I had not installed the upgrade for several weeks after I downloaded it, so I am past the 30 days for a refund. There is nothing I prefer with the 2011 version over the 2010. The GUI is very different and for me not as easy to use. I can't get a refund on TI 2011. I did ask for a refund on the Plus pack and so far am getting the runaround.
"Hello Keith,

Thank you for your response. Apologize for the delay with resonse.

The Plus Pack is only an Add-on with the program. It is used to recover backup archive on a dissimilar hardware.

Installation of Plus Pack might not be the root cause of this issue. Hence, I would appreciate your patience and co-operation in this matter.

Looking at the screenshot once again, I could find that the source disk you are trying to create the copy of is C:\ and D:\ and also the Desination selected is D:\. This cannot be possible. You cannot create the backup of one drive onto the same drive.

Please select C:\ as the destination drive and D:\ as the destination drive.

Please let me know if you are using the correct credentials to access Network disk and let me know if you have followed the steps sequentially in the document mentioned as under:

http://kb.acronis.com/content/13504

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I will leave your case open, until you confirm this resolves your issue. I look forward to your response.

Notice no indication of how to get a refund. So it appears that because they believe the problem is not the Plus Pack I can't get a refund, notwithstanding the main program has this bug in it.
As a previous contributor has stated: before buying or upgrading, check the user forums because this kind of screwup can happen to any of us. Will I buy or recommend Acronis, not likely!

Hi,

I installed ATI 2011 trial just today - I'm looking for a replacement for my current backup solution (I'm having major issues with it) - and ATI looks great. I really like the interface, but I'm experiencing the same hangups as the people who posted in this thread already - sometimes ATI wakes up after several tens of seconds, sometimes I have to kill the process.

However, I found out that making sure that all the Network drives are connected fixes the problem.

But I don't like this as an solution - I use my notebook both for personal purposes and for work. And I certainly don't want to be connected to the company's VPN at all times - if only for security reasons.

My specs are Windows 7 Professional x64, Core2Duo with 4GB RAM laptop.

I hope this issue gets fixed, it's a shame that such great looking piece software is made very hard to use with such amateurish issue.

Matej Zabsky

If you have only the trial, don't buy it. TI 2011 is not working properly as you might tell from all the posts to this forum. If you don't have a network drive that you sometimes attach, you will probably have no problem. Good luck!

I somehow hope they will finally fix this issue (given this thread is over month old). I doubt it would be too hard to add a condition "ignore disconnected network drives".

And having to have all network drives connected while working with ATI is still smaller issue than Norton Ghost turning file system of my external hard drive into goulash (don't ask me how it did it, but it did - repeatedly).

I doubt I will invest my $$$ into this software if the bug is not removed at the end of my trial period though.

I also cannot get TI 2011 to run, get the "not responding" as soon as I try to select any function, and I have let it run for hours just to see if it was truly just slow.
My system is Win7 x-64, all current maint, and built from scratch within the past week.
Removing and reinstalling TI 2011 makes no difference.
The printer has an address assignment for a card reader, and disconnecting the printer has no effect.
There are no network attached drives in the config.

My system has 6 large drives, plus one h/w raid array of 6TB, single address assignment, and another [also H/w raid] of 8TB, split into 7 logical volumes.

I've a sneaking suspicion that the two large arrays are a contributing factor in the problem, though I have no hard evidence to support such. TI 2010 ran in this config, very slowly, but at least it ran. Historically, TI has run very slowly for me when the config contains a multitude of drives [20+), many of them 1-2 TB.
I commented on this long ago [http://forum.acronis.com/forum/9062]

I have TI 2011 running on a Windows 64 bit system and also experienced the "not responding" and excessive slowness in the User inerface. Peter's work around works for me. I had two mapped but offline networked drives. Instead of ensuring those systems were online, I just disconnected the drives. Now my navigation thru the GUI is close to what I would expect.

It's still a problem that Acronis needs to fix, but at least I now know how to may the product usable.

Hi all!

Thank you for your comments. I have good news: our Development team reported that they've managed to find a fix for the issue and include it to the upcoming update release. Unfortunately we have no ETA available on when it'll be out, but  we believe that it will be out shortly.

Thank you for your patience and all your comments. Please let us know if you have any questions, we'll be glad to address them.

@Yana
This is good news, I hope it's a true fix. I, as well as others who have put forth a great deal of time I'm sure, would most certainly love to hear what problem the development team located and what sort of fix will be applied. I hope you're able to share a little more information to those who have tried to help.

I had the same problem with Acronis TIH 2011 and after I deleted a RAW partition on one of my disk drives the problem went away.

Opps I forgot to include I'm running version 14.0.6696 of 2011 TIH. Not sure why a RAW partition would cause it to freeze, but deleting it did fix the issue.

My original post on this forum is post #65.
In my second post #68 I stated that my case was sent up the ladder to the “expert team” and that they are working on my problem. Well, I sent them more dump files and diagnostics and they promised to get back to by April 8, 2011. I got no reply so I sent them a reminder on April 22 and still no reply. Needless to say I am not impressed. I was optimistic at first that they would solve my problems but now I’m very disappointed with Acronis. I’ll keep you updated on whether or not they even reply to my emails.
I’m now using the latest version 6696 of TIH 2011 and it didn’t help at all.

I sent Acronis another request this morning for news about my case. Just as I was posting the above message about Acronis not getting back to me I got an email from them. Here is part of that email.

According to forum TOU private communications cannot be posted.

I've got my fingers crossed. I have always liked the earlier versions of TIH and hope this new release will fix the problems.

Hi men,

I have the same "not responding" problem, since 6 month and more, I can't wait any longer !
I invite you all guys to go for Paragon Backup Recovery v10.0 x64 Suite !!
It does the same but it works !

Here's my final update on my problems with TIH 2011. I went through all the upgrades and finally Ver 6869 seemed to work without bugs. I originally had trouble with a card reader installed in my machine. With the card reader enabled TIH ran very slowly. I eventually disabled it and things ran better. I never did enable it again and am using an external USB card reader now.
Because of all my problems, Acronis offered my a free upgrade to TIH 2012 which I accepted. It is running fine.
