Unable to recover from Nonstop Backup, "Acces to the file is denied"

Thread needs solution

Using Windows 7, x64. TIH 2012 trial. Nonstop backup is succesfully and routinely backing up to my network share on my Buffalo NAS. For the heck of it, and to make sur ethat it is possible to actiually recover from this nonstop backup, I clicked the "Recover" button. After about ten seconds of looking at an animated circular arrow progress indicator, I get the "Access to file is denied" error message. Further, the progress indicator remains animated as if it's still doing something.

The file is definitely on my NAS in a folder created by TIH called "Time Explorer Storage" and has four file in it totalling about 460mb. TIH on my laptop has no trouble writing to it regularly. Recovery, however, doesn't work.

This is an important feature for me, and if it works I will buy a number of copies of TIH 2012 for all of our machines. What do I need to do to get this to work? Thank you.

Further update: I made sure that firewall is disabled. I backup to the NAS via a mapped drive letter in Windows (L: in this case). Doing a standard backup in this fashion works fine.

UPDATE: I tried to recover from a standard partition backup and I got the same "Access to file is denied" error with a code: 0x00040014+0x0000FFF0+0x800704C3. The knowledge base has no info on this code

 Hello David,

Thank you for taking time to contact us.

The issue needs a closer investigation. I am sending a new file to you via PMs, please install it and see if the issue remains.

Thank you.

ANOTHER UPDATE:
I disconnected the drive letter mapping of the shares on my NAS, and I deleted the backups (as well as the jobs created in TIH). I then made new partition and nonstop backup jobs where I directly browsed to the NAS share using the network path. Now the destination looks like "\\MYNAS\somedirectory\" instead of what it was before, which was "L:\somedirectory". I also added the necessary login credentials for directly accessing the NAS shares.

This fixed it. Now, clicking the 'Recover' button brings up the recovery explorer within a few seconds.

Now, feeling pretty good about this, I attempted to change the partition backup settings to add a reserve copy. For this, I am attempting to set as a destination a shared folder on my Dell Zino 410 HTPC (Win 7 Ultimate x64, 6gb RAM, 750gb hd, quad-core AMD Phenom). I can browse to the folder via the same UNC-type path, in this case '\\ZINO\x201Backups\'. There are no credentials required for accessing this folder in the network. When I save the settings it appears like nothing is happening, but then I get an error dialog that says the file can not be accessed.

Any ideas?

I did get the PM and will follow the steps you provided, Oleg, at the first opportunity I get. Thank you.

Do you mean there is no password to access the share or is the Everyone user granted full access?
Is it shared through homegroup?
How are your advanced sharing settings setup? Do you let Windows manager or do you use Windows User Accounts and Passwords?

First, no machine is part of home network a la Windows HomeGroup. On the HTPC I simply created a folder on the C:\ root, set its sharing permissions to Everyone and full read/write/execute control. The folder has no username/password requirements. The machine itself has a password required to log into it upon waking from sleep or powerup -- is this required by TIH to access the folder? From my laptop I have no problem browing the HTPC's shared folders without having to enter any credentials, as long as the machine is not sleeping.
To that end, I ensured that he machine was indeed awake prior to attempting to test. Further, I have set as a pre-backup command to use a little app I found online called WOL which takes the HTPC's MAC address as a parameter in order to wake up the machine if it is asleep or powered down. My machines and router are configured by me to allow me to awake them remotely or locally as I need to...I have tested this thoroughly and it all works.

As an aside, it would be great to have a way to add a delay after issuing a command from TIH before commencing with a backup to allow a target machine to wake up or power-on, etc. Unless there is a simple batch script that can do this? For instance, have a pre-backup command which runs a script to call the WOL executable, then wait for 60 seconds, then return control back to TIH (wait for completion check box is checked). Or, as a new feature, add a delay option to TIH.

David,

I am not sure what is the problem. You mentioned you were trying to change the backup settings. Try to set up a new task instead.

Oleg,
I have exactly the same problem on my netbook HP with Windows XP and backup directory on NAS (FreeNAS).
Unable to recover from Nonstop Backup, "Acces to the file is denied" on NAS.
In ATIH2012 (trial) I have defined a shared folder "\\MYNAS\somedirectory1\somedirectory2\.
Any ideas ?
Jacek

I found patch 6131. But this patch not resolved the problem with freenas.
