last backup has failed!

Thread needs solution

Hello,
I have been trying to create a backup of my system for the good part of today and each time I have tried to do so after the backup is completed and shortly after the validation process has started I get a message that the last backup failed.

Each time I have removed the backup from the external hard drive, restarted the pc and started all over again. This is the third time (today) this has happened. Except this time I left the backup on the external hard drive; right clicked on it and selected Archive and then selected Validate from there. I am hoping that it will validate the backup by doing it this way, but don't know if it will or won't.

I did open up the log for this most recent attempt at a backup and as per the log it states
Analyzing partition 'C:'... with the date and time
Analyzing partition '0-0'... with the same date and time
Analyzing partition "G:'.... (this is my external hard drive) with the date and time
Create Full Backup Archive
From:
NTFS (C:)
Compression: Normal
Pending operation 147 started: 'Creating partion image'
Locking partition C:...
Backup up to file:
"G:\My Backups\My_system.tib"
Pending operation 3 started: 'Validate Backup Archive'.
Operation with partition '0-0 was terminated
Details:
The archive is corrupted (0x70020)
Tag = 0xF5F8CBCF76155663
Operation has completed with errors.

This is the same log file for each of the failed backup attempts.

I never had these problems when using True Image 2009 - never an issue with a backup not completing or completing with errors.

The only things that are running at the same time as the backup are my firewall and anti-virus program.

I am running windows xp professional with all of the current updates and sp3.

TIA

My suggestion would be to check your system disk for errors.
From a command prompt
CHKDSK C: /R

Does your backup completes without the validation?
If yes, try the validation manually. Does it complete? If it doesn't complete within Windows, can you validate from the recovery CD?

Validations can fail because of hardware errors. Moving the archive to another disk, trying to validate again, testing the memory with memtest86 are ways to troubleshoot validation issues.

Hello all,

Thank you for your posts and thank you for your help Grover and Pat.

Lisa, let me provide you with additional assistance please.

It is possible your backups are corrupted because of errors on your hard drive. I would recommend the following troubleshooting guide that helps with resolving such problems.

If you continue to experience this issue after running checkdisk could you get back to me with this report so that we can take a look at your partition structure?

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Hello and Thank You to all who are helping me out. It is greatly appreciated.

I did create a backup a week ago with no problems what so ever so I really wasn't sure why it would fail this time.

The hard drive in the computer is a new hard drive (only about 2 months old) so there should not be any issues with it but I will run the chkdsk anyway. I will also review the information in the link about troubleshooting issues with corrupt backups as well. I will get back to you and let you know the results once I have done those steps.

The external hard drive is a 500gb Seagate Free Agent which I use to keep the backups of both of the computers.

Later on yesterday, I did use this same external to create a backup of the other pc and that one completed with no issues.

According to the information in the log the backup completed without problems but failed during the validation process. I did go to the external hard drive and right clicked on the backup and selected the Archive from the drop down menu and from there selected Validate. But to be honest I never got a screen stating whether or not the validation process completed or not. I did see the little icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen saying that it was running the program but there was never any screen afterwards to state whether or not all was fine with that backup.

How would I know if the validation process completed or not and how would I do a validation from the recovery CD (and do you mean the Acronis CD or the Windows XP CD)?

Again, Thank You So Very Much for all your help and assistance. It is truly appreciated.

Lisa

I forgot to mention that in regards to running the memtest ~ I did that just about 2 months ago when I upgraded the memory in this pc and both modules passed with no errors and I ran the test with just on module inserted into the one slot for 8 passes and then moved it to the other slot and repeated the test for anther 8 passes. I then removed that memory module and repeated the same steps with the other memory module and both passed with no errors.

Validation when booted from a TI Bootable media Recovery CD.

Where results of a chkdsk are displayed.

If you used Acronis validation from within Windows, the log file should list any errors or whether successful.
When validation occurs within the TI Recovery CD, if I remember correctly, there is a successful completion window. However, you may also have access to a log file if you look at it before rebooting. The log file will be from a menu entry.

Disk errors are not necessarily due to age. A forced shutdown or files not properly written to disk--all can add to a disk needing correction. If the disk errors are numerous, you may have to due the check more than once. Start the check and then go to bed as the check can take several hours.

Hello,
Thanks for the information on how to validate the backup from the bootable media recovery cd as well as where to find the results of a chkdsk. I will most definitely review both of these.

I did run the chkdsk and there were no errors or problems found. Later on I did try to create a new backup after running the chkdsk and this time it worked without any issues at all so I simply deleted the backup from the day before which had not been validated. But at least now I will know how to validate the backup from the recovery cd!

Again, Thanks So Very Much for all your assistance and patience. It is greatly appreciated.

# 33 of my 2012 Acronis True Image Home backup says "failed to open data stream" after doing a backup. Line # 38 says Operation has completed with errors. I have ran chkdsk/r and found no errors. I am attaching the Acronis report file referred to in this thread. Can you or anyone help me figure out what is wrong and what to do. FYI, I added Kaspersky Pure in November and have ran several backup since then and prior to this one and they ran ok. I have version 6131 and when I tried to install the new build 6154 it said I had latest version???
