ATIH2012 upgrade installation problems

Thread needs solution

Upgrading from ATIH2012 v 5545 to ATIH2012 v 6154 has not been easy. I have finally succeeded but post here for information of others and in case these are known issues that need fixing.

My operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium (32 bit) with SP1. I am the sole user and Administrator. This status has not changed since the installation of ATIH2012 v 5545

When I first tried to install the upgrade I was presented with an error message that said words to the effect that the installation could not proceed as the Administrator settings were different between my existing installation (version 5545) and the one I was trying to install (6154), which I found rather puzzling. The advice was to download the file separately and then run the install manually rather than using the update feature within the program.

This I did but was still met with the same Administrator issue preventing the installation form proceeding. But this time an information window advice a clean install, which involved the complete removal of version 5545

Un-install completed, I had problems getting beyond the first few steps of the installation as it just would not accept the serial number / licence key from the product I was upgrading, so I had to go through the performance of getting a temporary serial number in order for the installation to proceed and thankfully complete.

Once installed I was then able to Activate the software with my existing serial number from previously purchased software. This whole rigmarole was not only time consuming, it was very frustrating!

It also meant that I lost to my previous backups created with version 5545 so had to start all over again once the new version did install

Is this normal? Or does the upgrading system within ATIH2012 have bugs?

Is there a way to re connect with drive images made with earlier versions of ATIH or do you have to start over with each upgrade?

The existing tibs shouldn't have been touched at all and should be still be in thier original locations. You can search for them with ati or using win explorer.

Yes I tried that, but Acronis did not recognise them for some reason. So have started all over again ...

If your upgrade had been routine, then yes, it should have continued. Your problems caused the software to start again from scratch. Personally, each time I move from one build to another build or version, I stop my existing tasks and recreate new tasks pointing to new empty storage folders.

Thanks GroverH that's noted. Just hope in that case that all works well without causing mayhem and chaos as there would be no drive image to restore to...... unless of course that would work would it be possible to re-install the previous version of Acronis. Maybe I'm just getting myself overly confused here.

Any tib backup file should be restoreable (providing it is not corrupt) by a newer or the same version which created the file. My restore preference is to use the bootable media CD. You can also use the CD to validate your backups.

If you wanted to revert back to a prior version of TI, the best way to do that would be to restore a backup which contained the old version when installed. Otherwise, you would need to uninstall the new version, run cleanup and then re-install the old version and start with all new tasks.

Thanks. I shall remember to always verify drive images once created which should stop me having a corrupted one sitting there. I always keep the downloaded installation file for the previous version on my PC "just in case" which has proved useful in the past, though not needed for Acronis ..... yet

The install file is always available for download from your own registration page. The most convenient validation is have the validation done as part of the backup task. And, you can also validate when booted from the CD. As the CD is the best restore vehicle, the CD can also be used for another method of validation without Windows being involved. Good luck.

Thanks again GroverH :-)
With the most recent drive image I did validate as part of the backup task and will do so in future. A good habit to get into.

Although I have created Bootable Media am not confident about how to use it. I guess the disc is put in the drive on cranking up Windows (which does have the DVD drive in its boot sequence) and Windows will launch from that, or does it just launch Acronis in order to do a restore?

Windows is not involved at all. The Bootable Media is "Bootable", meaning that your PC boots from that media (whether on CD-R or USB flash drive). You need to make sure your PC's BIOS is set to allow booting from CD or USB before internal hard drive.

Versions are backwards compatible through the follwoing versions:

ati10
ati11,
ati2009
ati2010
ati2012

Thanks for your help folks. I think my PC does boot from the CD drive first, will try and catch the text as it boots up next time ... 8-)
