HELP- Using Disk Management

Thread needs solution

I've connected a new PATA HDD to a USB port and Win XP did not allocate a drive letter to it.
In Acronis, Disk Management - Add new disk - the new disk is shown as Disk 5 - Dynamic, and correctly identified (capacity and serial number), on Interface USB.
When I click on 'Partition Creation', a messagebox appears with: -
'The logical disk you have chosen is currently in use. Click MORE to view a list of opened files."
Clicking 'More' shows an empty list !
'Retry' results in the same.

Advice on how to get this HDD partitioned or formatted appreciated.

This an old hdisk, new one? Has it been activated or formatted before?

Thanks Scott - I was unsure, having just bought the HDD 2nd hand.

I've now got the drive recognised, formatted and a drive letter allocated, using Win XP tools.

For the benefit of others, the procedure is: -
1. Go to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Management
2. Click on the small section that says "Unknown" or "Not Initialized".
3. Right click and select "Initialize Disk"
4. Right click on the right portion of the next window and select "New Partition" to start the New Partition Wizard.
5. Select "Primary Partition" and continue with the wizard.
This will allow you to allocate a Drive Letter and Format the drive.
