2009 Recovery CD Hangs when "Browse for Backup" is clicked

Thread needs solution

I'm trying to do a restoration of a backup I had performed with my True Image Home 2009 Recovery CD and every time I click "Browse for Backup" it just hangs/freezes and nothing happens. I have tried the F11 and "quiet acpi=off noapic" trick I learned of from my searches on this forum to no success. The computer in question is an older Gateway laptop, probably about 6 years old.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am completely lost at this point. Thanks!

Hello Don,

Welcome to our Forum, we're glad to greet you here.

I regret to inform you that the Acronis True Image Home version you're using is very outdated. It's no longer developed, updated or supported, and we will not be able to get the Development team involved in the investigation (and it's clearly required here).

I would like to offer you the following scenario:

  1. Remove your current installation of Acronis True Image Home 2009
  2. Install a trial of the most recent version: Acronis True Image Home 2012
  3. After that please check whether the issue remains

If it's present, please send us (either to me via PM or to support via chat) Acronis Linux Report. If the issue's no longer present, contact me anyway, we'll think of further steps in this situation.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you.

I just saw that indeed! My 2009 has been working perfectly fine for me for years so I never upgraded. OK then. I trust that images created with 2009 can be fully used by 2012 right?

Don,
Yes. the 2012 version can restore the 2009 files.

Before you consider upgrading, you may want to consider using the Acronis 2009 repair function.
Restart the installation TI 2009 installation file which will offer you the repair choice. Do the repair which will install a fresh copy overtop your existing installation. If your current 2009 is not the most recent, you could choose to download the last release of 2009 and use it for your repair install.

Ok my problems are all solved. I uninstalled 2009 and installed 2012 then created a new recovery CD which worked perfectly. Thanks for the assistance.

Thanks Don for the update. The 2012 differs greatly from the 2009 version. Here is a link I suggest you digest before you begin using 2012. The time spent reading now will save you some frustrations later.

Also note the 2012 help offerings listed along the left margin of this webpage.

Same issue with Acronis 2011 so it appears that it may not be a simple as the 2009 version being too old. I also have tried all the solutions shown in the forum with no luck. I am going to try installing Acronis 2012 to at least get through this latest computer repair.

In general however a back-up utility should not require installing a newer version than the back-ups and boot media were created from. I am being proactive in replacing my HDD in advance of a failure as I have started getting some errors. If my computer had already crashed my only alternative would be to reinstall Windows and all of my applications from scratch, something I purchased Acronis to avoid.

Jeff,
Usually, you can boot from the CD which created the backup and that CD or any newer CD can restore you backup--without a fresh Windows install. If you added newer hardware, that could be an issue but for the most part, a restore is possible. In fact, Acronis has posted they will help on any restore--even beyond the 30 days support limit.

Did you download the 2011 iso bootable media file and create a new CD
Can you be more specific about your problem. Maybe some of us can help or at least find a workaround.

I created a back-up from Windows not from the CD. Problem was with the boot CD/DVD used to restore from back-up hanging when I tried to browse for the back-up to restore, which has nothing to do with my computer or the actual back-up. I found a great workaround however, another back-up and restore package from Paragon Software. I had to back-up my computer again but it worked great and took less time than continuing to try and figure out how to make Acronis work. Of course since it worked so well I will be using it going forward. Price was right also as there is a very capable free version. Had Acronis worked I would have stuck with it but since it didn't I had to search for an alternate solution and fortunately there is a very good one.
