can't mount image in Windows 8.1

I've mounted images for many years using my backed-up Acronis images. This is the first time this has failed:
Fails to mount on two independent PCs (separate archive of course).
I tried mounting from both Personal Vault as well as the local folder on my D: drive.
I just wanted to mount C: drive on E: (also tried other letters).
I called support and he asked me to validate my full archive of 165 GB -- that succeeded just fine after almost 2 hrs.
I see:

We have two Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1 Touch PCs with SSD running Windows 8.1 Pro. (Backups in our archives from Windows 8.0, before the recent upgrade, also failed).
I'm running the very latest 11.5 AB&R. My guess is that Acronis AB&R has not kept up with Windows 8 permission changes?

So far Acronis Support is in Denial.
I also tried two of their suggestions:
I moved the ACRONIS archives on our PCs, e.g., D:/ACRONIS/ -> ACRONIS_2013_10_30, and created a new D:/ACRONIS/ . This of course works as expected, and a new archive was created on each PC.
SAME PROBLEM -- can't mount.
Then, I copied the new archive to my C: drive.
SAME PROBLEM -- can't mount.
AGAIN: SAME PROBLEM on Two PCs, each with their separate licenses and running Acronis independently (no network).

I could not get a working solution. All my Acronis runs validated Successful (on 2 PCs running independently), but I could not mount any of them.
I now include a simple one-line command in my nightly backup Cygwin script:
/cygdrive/C/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/WINDOWSPOWERSHELL/V1.0/powershell.exe -command 'C:\Windows\Sysnative\wbAdmin start backup -backupTarget:E: -include:C: -quiet'
After each image, I date the WindowsImageBackup directory/folder so that each run starts a new image. I also run a script to test for dates older than a given number of days and those are deleted.
I find it very easy to mount the .vhdx files and retrieve selected files. Except for not being able to do incremental and differential backups, this works very fast (a few minutes a night to backup 65 GB on C: to 55 GB E: -- wbAdmin does compression) and the images mount just fine. I have plenty of room on my 2 TB USB 3.0 Passport drive (which has password protection) to handle this.
I uninstalled Acronis, but will regularly revisit new versions as they come out.
