"Convert to GPT" unavailable for removable media

Thread needs solution

Hi Acronis community,

I just found out that is seems to be impossible to convert any removable media (which also includes external hard disk, e.g. connected via USB 3.0) to GPT - at least when using the recovery boot CD.
The KB articles only state that converting an MBR drive into a GPT one is unavailable for drives hosting the active operating system.

Is there any specific reason why ABR 11.5 does not support the conversion of MBR to GPT on a removable drive ?

Thanks for any helpful comment in advance !

Hello FNW,

Thanks for submitting you question.
I will make sure that we address the issue in a timely manner.
To begin with, can you provide two screenshots with explanation of what is being attempted for conversion:
1. Screenshot of your PC Disk Management configuration view.
2. Screenshot of Acronis Management Console's Disk Management view.

And also, clarify what exactly do you mean under "seems to be impossible". Is that so, when you right-click on the removable media in Acronis Management Console's Disk Management view > the conversion option is not available/missing?

I am looking forward to your reply.
Best regards,

Hi Bagaudin,

thank you very much for your quick reply and sorry for my very belated answer (Christmas kept me from getting it done).
I attached the two screenshots you requested although I somehow doubt that they will be very useful - even with my comments in them...
I am sorry for the German GUI texts in the screenshots, but I just did not find a way to switch the language of the boot CD and my OS is currently also in that language.

Nevertheless, I want to make clear that I am currently only using the boot CD (recovery medium) to get the MBR to GPT conversion done. I bought the software (B&R 11.5 Advanced Workstation with Universal Restore) only because of this bootable "Mini-Linux" system and do not intend to ever install the "full" (Windows) version as I just use it for backing up freshly installed clients / workstations.

Hence, having a fully-functional boot CD is crucial for me and I want to find out why I can convert an empty INTERNAL (1 TB) MBR hard disk to GPT while this is actually impossible for an EXTERNAL (500 GB) MBR drive. As I doubt this correlates with the size of the drive, the only thing I can think of is the integration (internal / external) of the hard disk.

Please feel free to ask whatever question might arise while examining this problem - I will be glad to provide as much information as I can to get this sorted out.

Best regards,

FNW
