If I run the Management Console on my laptop an start a backup task from the Management Console is that task running local to my laptop or local to the machine? I need to be able to start the task on the machine and it stay running when i disconnect my laptop.

In management console you see what happens on the machine it's connected to. Tasks do not stop when you disconnect the console.
