Offline (Cold, Disconnected) Backup

Thread needs solution

Good Day,

I have a requirement to maintain an offline backup annually, retained 5 years.

I would prefer to do this to USB HD.

I see 2 ways to do this.

1. Use the export option on my most recent "Full"
-Pro : Smaller individual files (1 per system), can span multiple drives.
-Pro : Vault data used for export.
-Con : More labor intensive. 5 clicks per system.
-Con : No dedupe?
-Con : Import only from CLI.

2. Create vault on USB. Run new "Full" to vault. Or, add second destination to primary job.
-Note : Dedup database need be with vault.
-Note : Can simply reattach vault for restore.
-Pro : Less labor intensive.
-Pro : Dedupe possible.
-Con : Data comes from source, not vault.
-Con : If vault is full job will fail?

Can anyone suggest a best / better practice?

Are my assumptions correct / accurate?

Vault with deduplication is not supported on USB disk. It will not allow to create it on removable disk, and if it is detected as 'fixed' it's not reocmmended anyway. In case 2) if you add the second destination, all backup made to the first one will eventually go there - there is only option to delete backups or move them to the second location, so if the primary task is run often, you will as many backups moved/copied to the second vault. So I'd go with the first variant.

Thank you for your reply.

I am evaluating AB&R in vSphere. It is not presenting my USB drive as a removable device. I presume creating a "personal" vault on USB is supported IAW : http://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/ABR11.5/index.html#1…

In regards to the Export. I am experiencing extremely slow performance with this.
I am exporting the first "Full." I am NOT having it merge any inc/diff to build a full.
I first exported directly to the USB which ultimately failed after 12+ hours. 275GB native size.
I then exported to local storage and the same data is taking around 8 hours.

This will be unacceptable when I have 5-8 TB of native data.

Thoughts?

Personal vault can be created there, but deduplication is supported only on centralized vaults. Exporting may be CPU-intensive if archive is compressed, did you notice what seems to be a bottleneck during export operation? Failure with USB disk operation may be caused by unstable disk connection.
Is this amount of data from the one machine or several ones?

The data was from 3 machines.
CPU Utilization was 20% across all cores (4). Memory was 50% utilized. Disk Q low with about 6 MB/s overall disk usage.

ExportSize\Time = 5.7 MB/s

When moving files around the local system I easily see 70-80 MB/s.

Slow replication speed was observer with replication from one deduplicated vault to another, but the problem with personal vault is not a known one. I'd recommend you to contact our support with this one.
