Problem Restoring to Dissimilar Hardware

Thread needs solution

This is a strange one. I have backed up a SBS 2008 Server. It had an Adaptec 5405 (IBM OEM) controller. The boot partition was on its own set of Raid 1 disks and it has a second set of disks Raid 5 for data.

I am restoring it to a new Intel S1200V3RPS motherboard with an Adaptec 8405 in a single Raid 5 volume. It boots but..... I have never seen anything run so slow. It will sit there for 15 minutes doing nothing then all of a sudden start finding new devices. It will want to reboot and do the same thing. Then I will install the video driver and it will will sit there for 15 minutes and then all of a sudden start the new video.

Task manager doesn't show anything taking up memory or CPU. I try and go in to services and the services appellate will open but not display anything. It is as if the hard drivers are soooooo slow and that isn't the case. I can install Server 2012 from ground zero and it runs like a bat out of hell.

So... I decided to restore to a single SATA hard drive thinking it might be something in the Raid Array and I can't even get a single SATA drive to boot. It blue screens with a Directory Services error C00002E2.

I have done probably a hundred base metal restores to dissimilar hardware over the years but have never seen anything like this. Have anyone else?

Hello Jim,

Thank you for your posting! The root cause of the issue is probably the misaligned file-system. It's not possible to determine why the file-system is not alligned correctly without a deeper investigation. Please create a support ticket for that. As it's a recovery issue, you don't need the active support program.

Thank you,
