Catalog Folder Large

Thread needs solution

I am running out of disk space on my server and most of it is due to the Catalog folder getting very large.  I have purged many old backups, but it doesn't reduce the size of the Catalog folder.  Is there a step I've possibly missed?  Also, there are about 25 sub-folders under the Catalog folder that contain 34GB of data, but none of these directors have been written to in several months.  Is it safe to delete these?  Thanks for the help.

Hello Jeremy,

I'd suggest reading the following threads that deal with a similar issue

[SOLVED] Large disk space consumption in C:\ProgramData\Acronis\BackupAndRecovery\MMS\Catalog\

[RESOLVED] How to reduce very large catalog size?

Should you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you for sharing those links with me!  I have read those discussions already, and I do not think they quite address my issue (but perhaps I misunderstand).  I want to keep cataloging on, but just reduce the size of the catalog.

When I first noticed the disk space issue, I went into the management console and deleted many old backups.  We had gone through a process of renaming all 30-40 of our Windows systems, so Acronis maintained the old computer name archives and started a completely new archive name for each of the systems.  I went in and deleted all the old archives that no longer existed, but the catalog size has not reduced.

So my question is this:  How do you keep cataloging turned on, but reduce the size of the catalog after you have deleted outdated archives?  I hope this helps.

Here is more detail regarding my problem.

Earlier this afternoon:

Archives: 38
Backups: 645
Backed up Data in TB: 130.09
Catalog Size: 94.00GB

Later this day (after deleting quite a few backups)

Archives: 34
Backups: 535
Backed up Data in TB: 110.13
Catalog Size: 96.5GB

So I reduced the backed up data by 18% and the number of backups by 20% and the catalog gets bigger.

This afternoon:

Archives: 33
Backups: 504
Backed up Data in TB: 103.81
Catalog Size: 94.2 GB

This morning:

Archives: 33
Backups: 504
Backed up Data in TB: 103.49
Catalog Size: 94.4 GB

Is there some type of re-index I need to run?  How about deleting the catalog?  Will it rebuild itself, and maybe be about 20% smaller?

Today:

Archives: 33
Backups: 517
Backed up Data in TB: 105.1
Catalog Size: 94.8 GB

Any suggestions?

Archives: 33
Backups: 513
Backed up Data in TB: 104.94
Catalog Size: 95.2 GB

I have reduced my overall amount of backed up data, backups, and archives by nearly 20%, but the catalog has not gotten any smaller.  The information I have been provided thus far explains how to turn off the catalog, but not how to reduce its size.  Is there an answer to this question?

Archives: 33
Backups: 522
Backed up Data in TB: 109.05
Catalog Size: 95.5 GB

Hello Jeremy,

the only way to reduce the catalog size is to switch cataloging from Full to Fast, delete the catalog folders with the large files and restart the Acronis services. Catalog will be recreated according to the specified settings and present backup files.
