Deisgn question about site to site backups with tape being the last leg

Thread needs solution

I have a design question about multiple sites rolling up to a central tape library. Here is the layout...

I have multiple locations that are essentially standalone. They all have Acronis Advanced Backup 11.7 and backup to disk on a daily basis. We also have a central location with Acronis Advanced 11.7 with a working tape library attached. What we would like to happen is to take the full weekly or monthly backups at the local sites and send them to the central location for backup to tape. This copy process will only be happening maybe once a week due to networking restrictions. We would also like the ability to restore the backups at the central site or send them back to the remote site if we need to. I'm most concerned about getting the data from the remote site to the central one. Once it's there, I can take all day to backup the data to tape.

I've looked into some of the documentation but I'm not sure what would be best way to go about it. I could replicate the drive the vaults are on, I could also export or disconnect the vault and send it to the central location via a script. Connecting the sites as remote sites is doable, but I haven't found a lot of documentation about it and I'm not sure it would fit in our environment. I'm also trying not to back up backups but at the same time, trying to cut down on transfer times. My window for transferring large data is only a couple hours a week. As these will probably be monthly backups of full machines I'm assuming the worst and they will be large.

Any ideas on how to go about designing this? If I have to change my environment slightly, I might be able to. I just need a good reason.

Thanks. Peace

Hi

Version 11.7 does not have "out-of-the-box" solution for your case. You can workaround it by using either second backup plan that will back up tib files (yes, it's is backup of backup) or use acrocmd "export backup" command to export desired backup to centralized tape location.

"12.5 Advanced"  supports your scenario natively: it is possible to create separate replication plan with its own schedule. You can try this using trial version.

Thank you Ramil. I had a feeling I was going to have to jump through some hoops to get it to work the way they wanted. We have the upgrade to 12.5 on the timeline but I'm not sure when it will happen. I will pull down the trial version for testing.

Sorry for popping this up again, but I have a related question....

Let's throw out all the network concerns and time frames. If I wanted to do this (full backups to another location where it would be backed up to tape), would this work?

Site A does it's normal GF-F-S backups to local disk.

To make life simplier, Site A has a separate backup plan that happens every Sat night, that does a full backup of the machine(s) to an unmanaged Vault which is located on Site X's network share.

Site B would have the same configuration including an unmanaged Vault on Site X.

Site X backs up it's share location to tape every Sunday which should pull all the backups from Site A and B. A cleanup job would run afterwards to clean up the share.

I think this would work and would allow us if need be to restore back to the unmanaged Vault. I'm still trying to build this test environment so I'm not 100% sure. Is my logic correct? I'm currently restricted to the 11.7 version. The upgrade is currently on hold.

Thanks

Todd,

You can do this using 11.7 but recovery will be done in 2 steps:

  1. recover tib file from tape
  2. recover files/volumes from tib files

Okay, cool. But am I going the right direction in setting up the unmanaged vault on Site X?

Yes, that will work.
