File Level Backup (or Restore) based on modified date

Thread needs solution

Hi,

Using Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7, is it possible to backup (or restore) file server data based on modified date? I have file server with over 2TB of data. In a disaster recovery scenario it would take 6 hours or more to restore all volumes but if I was able to backup only current data (say data created in the last month) or alternatively choose to restore only those files created within the last month this would greatly reduce the restore times.

Thanks

Paulk

Hi Paul,

It is possible to perform granular recovery of files from disk/volumes backup and to simplify the search you can use the Cataloging function - after browsing the folder where the files reside, you'll see the dates. In other words there is no need to back up separate files using some additional criteria (still if you back up an entire folder then only new/updated files will be backed up during incremental backup run).

Thank you.

Hi Vasily,

Thanks for the response.

As you say, it is fairly straight forward to recover individual files or folders but from what I can see, I need to manully choose the files?

This is the scenario: I have a Full Backup of a large file server (2TB) and something happens that I lose the server. I want to restore only those files that were modified in the past 3 months. These files could be in any of many thousands of folders or subfolders so clearly, it isn't feasible to manually go into each and select the files I want so how to I specify in the restore job only to restore files created or modifies in the past three months.

Note: I currently on have unmanaged vaults. Is it possible to do what I'm asking in with an Unmanaged vault or does it need to be managed?

Regards

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thank you for the clarifications - it's much appreciated. The scenario you describe can be implemented as follows: 1) Mount an existing backup as a virtual volume which will appear as local disk in corresponding system to which you're connected from Acronis Backup Management Console (see details here); 2) Open the mounted volume in Windows Explorer and using its default search engine discover the files which "Modified Date" is less than 3 months old. 3) Copy the required files from the mounted volume.

Note that the backup mounting works from archives located on unmanaged vaults only.

Thank you.

 Hi Vasily,

Thanks for the response. This looks exactely what I'm looking for! I'm have a small problem though.

I've successfully mounted a volume from a recent backup. On the server where it is mounted I can add, delete or change all the files on the volume but I don't seem to be able to share. When I try sharing I get an error stating that "An error has occurred while trying to share FOLDERNAME. The device or directory does not exist. The shared resource was not created at this time"

Have you seen this error before? Any suggestions on next steps.

Thanks again

Paul

Hi Paul,

Sharing a mounted volume over network is not possible I'm afraid because this volume is mounted through special Acronis driver and it is not recognized by Windows as normal local volume. To accomplish the task you can mount the volumes from backup on any machine which has Acronis Backup Agent for Windows installed, so you can mount it on one machine, then open a share on another (target) machine and copy the files from the local volume over to desired destination (over network).

Thank you.

Ahh, so close yet so far away :)

I guess I could use something like FreeFileSync to extract all files created/modified in the required period but the real challenge is the access rights to the folders. We have many thousands of files on any given volume and many folders with folder specific NTFS permissions (many of which do not allow access to the domain admin). I'll need to figure out a repeatable and quick solution to obtaining the necessary rights then copying the required files/folders.

Thanks for your help

Paul
