Manually Deleting Archives

Thread needs solution

Hi,

We are using Acronis Backup Advanced (Version 11.5 Update 5) to backup a list of machines on-site. The Acronis Management Server is installed on a virtual machine ic-pcnv-bkp-1, and is configured with backup plans to save the archives to a network share location \\icsysnas01\ACRONIS_BACKUPS\. Archives are currently being created and saved successfully; however there are some older archives which we wish to manually delete. We would also like to ensure all the metadata relating to the archives is aligned and correct.

Issues:

  1. We would like to delete the old archives using the Acronis Command-line utility (as per KB article https://kb.acronis.com/content/47159) from the management server. Before trying to delete archives, I would like to test other functions of the utility. The local command acrocmd list activities ran successfully, however I was unable to run the command acrocmd list archives --loc=”\\icsysnas01\ACRONIS_BACKUPS\” (see attached png and log file). I note that I get the same error message if I change the location name to garbage so it has something to do with not being able to find the folder (or the archives within the folder). How can this be further troubleshooted and fixed?
  2. How can we check (and fix) the archive metadata to ensure it is entirely aligned with the saved archives in the folder? For example, if archives have been deleted via Windows Explorer, and the metadata files get corrupted, how can this issue be identified and resolved?

Hello Sam,

Are the archives shown in the vault view of the Management Console? Is it possible to delete the archives using the vault view? See Delete a single archive or multiple archives. This will also update the meta information about backups in the vault.

Are you using a a managed centralized vault or an unmanaged vault? Have you specified credentials for access to the share?

Thank you,

Hi Ekaterina,

The archives are in a personal vault \\icsysnas01\ACRONIS_BACKUPS\. I can connect to icsysnas01 via the Management Console, and see the archives in the personal vault folder.

The problem is that this does not show me all the archives. There are some archives (visible in Windows Explorer) that are also in the \\icsysnas01\ACRONIS_BACKUPS\ folder which are old and are not visible via the Management Console. Somehow the metadata for these archives have been lost/corrupted? I wish to delete these files and clean-up the folder.

Some questions:

  1. Can I delete these old files via Windows Explorer?
  2. What other checks do I need to perform to ensure any metadata relating to the archives are aligned and correct (e.g. not referencing deleted archives)?

Thanks,

Hello Sam,

If you do not need these old backups and they are not shown in the vault view, you can delete them manually via Windows Explorer. After doing that please refresh the meta files with clicking on Refresh button in the vault view.

Please make sure, these backups are not a part of the backup chain you are still using. If you delete some incremental backups from the backup chain - all backups in the chain will become useless.

Best regards,
