Thread needs solution

I am working an issue with backups and them failing due to issues with the VSS service.

Please see attached screenshots to see error log.

I think I can use one of the following kb articles but not 100% sure.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your posting! Yes, please proceed with the article https://kb.acronis.com/content/22373. I would also recommend to delete the Acronis VSS Provider from the registry:

  • regedit -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\VSS\Providers\
  • navigate to the key {f782463b-33bb-4043-ad8d-60b728d26a6c} - it's Acronis VSS Provider
  • export this key and then delete it
  • (!) Do not delete the second key, it's Microsoft VSS Provider.

Test backup. If the issue persits, please follow the troubleshooting steps from this article.

Thank you,

Able to backup successfully with VSS disabled, unable to set System Provider as VSS service.

Attaching latest error reports using the following steps:

Error1 - deselecting the d drive from the backup settings and leaving vss on in auto
Error2 - VSS to software-system provider and left the d drive in the back up setting
Error3 - vss system provider and d drive out of the back up setting

Site is going to attempt kb 22373 and the registry edits.

Also reporting that the VSS selections are Enable or Disable only

Hi Chris,

  1. Select System Provider in the VSS settings;
  2. Make sure that there is sufficient free space on each volume for shadow copies (Troubleshooting part, 1.2)
  3. VSS writers should be enabled and in consistent state: Go to Start -> Run -> cmd. Execute the command: vssadmin list writers. If any errors, please contact Microsoft Support.

Thank you,

Site attempted the article and stopped at the registry changes with the following note:

'The file listed below was not in the registry for DC2'
delete the Acronis VSS Provider from the registry:
• regedit -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\VSS\Providers\
• navigate to the key {f782463b-33bb-4043-ad8d-60b728d26a6c} - it's Acronis VSS Provider
• export this key and then delete it
• (!) Do not delete the second key, it's Microsoft VSS Provider.

Why would there not be an Acronis VSS registry key and how do we recover the key to that location?
