What does "Backed up data size" refer to?

While looking at the unmanaged vault for the virtual machines, I see what is listed as the "Backed up data size". I then look at the .tib file and it doesn't match what is listed as the backed up size. So then I look at the .vhd, and it much larger (obviously) than the other listed sizes.
Is there an explanation for the size listing in the vault view?

"Backed up data size" is exactly the backed up data size. Another definition is: how much data you can recover from the backup.

Let's assume you backed up a 100-GB .vhd (thick format, i.e. not dynamically expanding) with 50 GB of data. You did a full backup with normal compression. The .tib file size may be about 40 GB. But you can recover the entire disk, i.e. 50 GB of data.

You do the next backup, the disk now has 52 GB of data. You do an incremental backup with normal compression. The .tib size is about 3 GB. But you still can recover 52 GB of data (provided that the full backup is intact).

So, for the first backup Backed up data size= 50 GB, for the 2nd Backed up data size= 52 GB.
