Why is backup so slow?

Thread needs solution

I am evaluating the Acronis Backup & Recovery Online 11 on our smallest server with 150 GB of hard disk space of which 87 GB is used. It has 2 virtual servers in Hyper-V (Linux & Windows XP). I started the initial backup job on Sep 12 at 11:32 AM. It has been 23 hours and it is just at 84% complete. We have a 90 Mbps up and 95 Mbps down bandwidth and tested using various speedtest servers (attached). Even at 50 Mbps, and for the entire 150 GB drive, it should theoretically take 6 hours only. Why is it so slow?

Hi Michael,

I'm glad to answer your question.

Our datacenters are located in Missouri and Massachusetts, United States and in Strasbourg, France.

You backups are stored in Massachusetts, so please check your upload speed choosing as destination this state.

If speed is very different from which our program reports (708KB/s), please contact our support team and we will be glad to help you with investigation.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you.

Thanks for answering. Massachusets is the closest state from us. I have logged in to my subscription at https://www.acronis.com/my/subscriptions/ and cannot find the link to check my upload speed. Can you please provide the instructions to do this?

You can roughly check your upload speed using the same tool as before, but simply need to choose Massachusetts as destination. Currently we don't have our own tool for speed test but working on implementation of it.

I just ran a test and it showed 6.4 Mbps upload speed. I have attached the image. Please advise.

Hello Michael,

actually, 6.21 mbps makes 776.25 KBps, which is practically your backup speed.

It simply means that there are some "bottlenecks" on the way from your server to our datacenter and they don't allow backup to be faster.

You can contact your internet provider, but I cannot guarantee that they help.

Thank you.

I use Online backup as well as local non stop back up. My ISP download speed is 77Mbs, and my upload speed is 13Mbs. However, when online back up starts, it normally shows a transfer speed of 300-500Kbs and an estimate of 40-45 days for 70Gb of data. What can be done to help ?

Hi,
I am based in the UK, got 20mb upload speed speed but my acronis online backup upload speed is 800kb.
Sending the backups to my own built ftp server is 10times faster.

I was excited to purchase full version of acronis online backup, but now shopping around for a online company with a better upload speed.

Acronis local backup is one of the best backup software but the online version is very disappointing.

P.s. there is nothing wrong with my connection, the way i have scheduled the backup, files i backup, my server, my laptop and the scheduled time.

All the best,

Hi Ahmad,

thank you for you for your posting and for your feedback.

Since you are located in UK your backups in our datacenter in Strasbourg, France.

Please use the following tool to check your upload speed and select Strasbourg as destination.

If the resulting speed is different from which our product reports, please contact our support team and we will be glad to help you with investigation.

Thank you!

Hello,
thank you for your reply.

I know exactly what my upload speed is and also I know the fact that your server for the UK users is based in France.

Could you please explain how exactly your support team will help me in this matter?

P.s. there is nothing wrong with my connection, the way i have scheduled the backup, files i backup, my server, my laptop and the scheduled time.

Thanks

I have managed to track down the issue for my online back-up. It was continually hanging on my email back up file which is 11Gb. Once I excluded this file, the whole data back up now for my data drive takes 10-15 mins and has been consistently good for three weeks now, every day.

I tested my speeds with Strasbourg and the results showed 75 Down and 19 Mb upload.

Hi,
It would be more convincing if you could post a screenshot of the backup progress status showing your upload speed.

In my case there is no files that can interfere with the backup.
I have tested with single .ISO file, single .ZIP file, .RAR file and other extensions.

The upload speed is simply not good.

Looking forward to your screenshots.

Hi Ahmed, Im not quite sure what you want me to show, but does the attached help ?

Hi,
I don't know what version of online backup you use but there must be a tab where you can see the upload progress and upload speed.

I think I have made up my mind. I am not going to purchase this facility.

thanks

Hi Ahmed, My online backup was getting too big, so I have deleted it to start again. here is a screen shot showing the upload speed at 9.2Mb/s - is this what you wanted to see ?

Hi,
We have a symetrical 200mb connection, and when using the trial "Acronis Backup and Recovery Online for Server" can't upload faster than 9 mb, we are located in Mexico, and have 2 servers in the US, we know the speed its 200mb with those servers (located in LA and Virginia).

What is the average speed for Acronis online backup?

Thanks

Hello MEMOSA,

Most Customers should expect to back up 2-5 GB/day. Some users will have higher performance if they have higher bandwidth connections; others will be slower.

Thank you.

Folks,

I have a Windows 7 64-Bit Professional computer using Acronis Backup 11.5 with unlimited Cloud backup package.

I had really bad (< 90KB/s) upload to cloud speeds ($99 unlimited program) and wondered about my ISP issues. Did the OOKLA and many other online upload/download network speed tests and was fairly consistent with download speed of 30MB/s and upload speeds around 6.5MB/s from my ISP ComCast-Warner (they are the biggest in the USA so they ARE the de-facto standard).

I went through the two weeks of good back-and-forth with Acronis Tech Support (in India by the accent and background sounds on the phone). Downloaded and installed the diagnostic programs they wanted me to use and got all of the results and uploaded everything to their FTP site for these kinds of advanced tech support review. From these results, I got an email indicating they wanted to do a conference call which took place yesterday and they used a TeamViewer software agent to operate my computer remotely from their site. Everything went perfectly, but they could not get the speed to move beyond the speed I stated earlier (a joke). In the end, after conferencing with many of their colleagues at the tech support center, they admitted they have no idea what is wrong, but think it is my ISP's issue.

I have contacted ComCast-Warner tech support and they told me to try another Cloud service on a trial basis (there are many) and I tried two more...Carbonite and Cloud-One. I could get upload speeds around what OOKLA and other online speed testers told me already with both of them. So this clearly tells me that ACRONIS Cloud service is faulty and/or underdeveloped for commercial use at this time.

Please understand, I love their local backup...it is outstanding performance and reliability, but their Cloud service is not ready for prime time, at least, according to a major ISP (ComCast-Warner) and the ACRONIS competitors.

Chris

Hi Christopher,

as far as I see from the support case, there was a confusion with Mbits/sec and Mbytes/sec, but you were able to clear up the situation. Acronis Cloud service uses the available channel and the backup speed pretty much corresponds with expected. Is it correct?

Thank you.

The Acronis cloud solution is not suitable for anyone with a lot of data and a slow internet up speed. Its a pity that Acronis doesnt make this clear in their marketing material. If it takes more than 30 days to upload, Acronis will not refund your subscription.

Hi Tony,

I made a mistake about the speed issue on the upload aspect of Cloud storage. I misunderstood Mbits versus Mbytes...big difference...about a factor of eight. Most cable uploads (like mine) operate around 6Mbits/sec which translates into 750kBytes/sec. If you upload, say 1Gbyte of data, that will take approximately 1Gbyte/750kBytes per sec or 22 minutes. Most uploads of the important categories run much higher amounts, like around 100GBytes. Now you are up to 2200 minutes or 37 HRs or > 1 day.

Just so you get a sense of the scale of things. Comcast (and other ISPs) do have Business class uploading speeds which are substantially faster, but the monthly rates are not fun to play with!

Hope this helps, Tony.

Chris

We have been trying so many times to move to Acronis for our online backup but evey time it fails on us. It appears that Acronis is just not yet ready for online backup for companies with large data.

Our upload speed is a solid 20mb
Data size 120GB
Backup type: Differential
Schedule: Daily

We found that Acronis servers are very slow for this amount of data. They say that they have different servers in different part of Europe, but all of them seems to be slow.

Acronis is a perfect solution for our local backup, but for our online backup Acronis is just not suitable.

@Tony Shew you are spot on about their marketing material.

hope it helps

I have the 2015 and I am doing LAN backup here at home to a WD network drive and it also VERY SLOW.  a 256GB solid state drive is estimated to be 9 hours backup!!!!!!  this is ridiculous

Hello jhun de leon,

Please start a separate thread in the proper forum section, for your product it would be Acronis True Image 2015 Forum. You will likely receive more responses.

Thank you,
