Licensing for KVM Guest VMs

Thread needs solution

My goal is to backup 12 Windows laptops and 4 Windows servers that are guest virtual machines running on a Linux KVM cluster.

I am running a trial of Acronis Backup 12. I have the agent installed directly on the guest virtual machines themselves. The guest virtual machines show up in the management console as a VM.

What licensing do I need to purchase to support this scenario? Do I purchase 1 physical server license for each guest VM? Or can I purchase 1 virtual host license and use it to back up all 4 of the guest VMs, even with the agent installed directly on the guest?

Hello Alvin,

You can buy 1 virtual host license per any supported hypervisor to cover an unlimited number of guest VMs on this host.

We don't make a difference between directly installed agents inside the guests or agentless backup methods.

So you'll need 12 workstation licenses and 1 host license.

Thank you.
