Confusion about tape handling & error displaying current backups on tapes ...

Thread needs solution

Hi,

we using a tape library with multiple slots to create weekly backups. The backup job ist a replication job, last full backups with 28 days retention time.

After a few weeks we get errors " Cannot find a free media in pool 'Woche' ", related to the tape capacity of 30TB and 4,5TB data every weekend impossible. But if we try to have a look into the tapes using the tape management there is no data displayed if we scroll down and pick up a host, only the first is accessible.

After reading some manuals I understand that Acronis Backup Advanced will only overwrite a tape if ALL backups stored on this tape are out of the retention time. But it seems that Acronis is writing parts of a backup if there is some free capacity on a tape with old backups, so the time to overwrite is 28 days again. Is that right?

What is best practice in this scenario? And how can we have a look on all stored data (name and date of backup) using tape management?

Many thanks,

Erik

Hello Erik,

I'd recommend taking a read of the article https://kb.acronis.com/content/59315 that provides an overview of Tape sets and the most popular use cases.

Yes, all backups on a tape should be marked for deletion based on the specified retention rules and there shouldn't be any backups on other tapes that depend on these marked for deletion backups.

Have you tried running inventory of tapes and re-scanning

Erik, regarding this issue - could you please clarify, how exactly you attempt browsing the backups on a tape? There is indeed a known issue, when backups are not shown when selecting another machine to browse from (attached a pic showing this issue)
