Newbie question on backup retention

Thread needs solution

I have only been using 12.5 for a short while (45 days).

I have 5 plans created that do full backup to a single tape drive every night.  I have multiple tapes, one for each day.  I have retention set to 25 backups for each of the plans.

When I look at an individual tape's backups, I see that some of the backups are 'marked for deletion'.

How do these actually get deleted, freeing up tape space?

Hello, unlike random-access devices (like HDDs), it is not possibile to delete each backup from tape by retention rules. Backups are marked as deleted in the database instead. Once all backups within the same tape are marked as deleted in the DB, the software can take such tape for overwriting.

Optionally you can set in the backup optionsOverwrite a tape in the stand-alone tape drive when creating a full backup. An inserted tape will overwritten forcibly by full backup.

Also, I recommend to check the article about tape sets. The case about daily backups on separate tapes might fit your needs: https://kb.acronis.com/content/59315
