PLEASE Lose the web / browser interface and FIX other issues

Thread needs solution

Recently upgraded from 11.7 to 12.5.  Backup seems to be working, but multiple new problems.

For starters, the new management console requires a browser to access. What on earth were they thinking!!!

  1. Browsers are the LEAST secure software on a PC and Acronis wants us to supply the system admin userID and password using a browser to open the console????
  2. In order to make the console available to a browser, another port has to be opened on the PC. No security is adequate for their method.
  3. Instead of allowing a backup task to email log detail to an administrator so he can determine what might have gone wrong, you ONLY send a link to the console which only works if you open it from the same PC.

Then there is apparently no way anymore, to have backup completion trigger last-backup validation. WHAT? You want me to trust your 'Backup-Succeeded' message when it hasn't even been validated? I need timely verification and with the current scheme I have to give hours more to ensure backups are completed before the scheduled validation can be triggered.

Then you released it without checking that the cleanup operations worked. And when you discovered the problem, you didn't tell your support personnel how to manually cleanup old backups so that the customer could continue until the new build was available.

The new system does not let me list old backups with details like the size of each. (Maybe I just haven't found that yet, but why the change). So backup identification and cleanup is more of a chore even now.

Frustrated and forced to review other backup options, but I'd rather not change.

Hi,

The main change in Acronis Backup 12 (and 12.5) in comparison with 11.7 is that we're switching communication between the components from proprietary protocols to standard ones and in 12.5 to work with web console interface you need only a single HTTP port (default 9877). All communication is performed using REST calls. There are still some communications between the components performed using old 9876 port (for example for connection to Acronis Storage Node), and we're planning to move to "single port" approach in future updates - this major change cannot happen at once, but we're moving towards it.

Additionally to improve security we will be adding support for both user and self-signed SSL certificates for web interface in one of the next updates (likely the actual next one).

Note that if you run web console on the same machine where you have Acronis Backup installed then you won't need to open the web port (9877) externally, e.g. it can be opened for local connections only which doesn't impact security.

Concerning the 3rd item - we will add functionality to attach the full log from backup activities to the e-mail notification (internal feature id: ABR-118617) in one of the nearest updates (again - likely it will be the next update). In addition to that note that you can schedule automatic reports to be sent over e-mail by schedule from Overview->Reports tab (this was not possible with 11.7) - it's not a direct replacement for the logs delivery, but a handy tool which may help to get you better tracking of the backup statuses.

The backup validation after backup completion option is available under Backup Options->Backup Validation:

Then you released it without checking that the cleanup operations worked. And when you discovered the problem, you didn't tell your support personnel how to manually cleanup old backups so that the customer could continue until the new build was available.

I assume you refer to a problem where clean up rules didn't work for backup locations on USB drives (the problem which was solved in Update 1). Could you please let me know the support case ID where you discussed this problem with our support team? We'll need to review it and check what might went wrong that caused the frustration.

The new system does not let me list old backups with details like the size of each. (Maybe I just haven't found that yet, but why the change). So backup identification and cleanup is more of a chore even now.

The backup sizes are listed in the corresponding field, but appearance may indeed depend on how the backups were created (by which version), so for some older backups (or backups in specific type of locations) it may not show. Can you please clarify these details, e.g. what kind of backups you don't see the sizes? Here's a screen shot sample where to look at (Backups->select location->select archive->Show Backups):

Thank you.
