Retention second location does not work

Thread needs solution

Acronis Backup 12.5 (7970)

I have 9 Tasks with backup to second Location (samba share) and 1 Task with first Location (same samba share)

Retention is 2 Weeks for Full-backup and 13 Days for Incremental-Backup.

Backuptask show delete for first and second Location but only on first Location the files get really deleted.

On second Location the files are still there only the Metadata is updated und at the webinterface you can see only a subset of the files that are really there.

Retention on the the 1 Task which has the samba share as first Location is working well and the backups are deleted.

Hi Tom,

The files may not be physically deleted if there is default backup format v12 used, which uses sparce files and re-uses the space in these files for new backups. The space inside the backup files is logically freed up as the result of retention rules (but the physical size of the files is not reduced). Still to get better understanding of what happens, can you please attach some screen shots illustrating what's physically present in the backup location + clarify what are the exact retention rules settings in the backup plans + what's seen in the recovery points list (from Recovery tab)?

Thank you.

Dear Vasily

thanks for feedback.

Regarding screen shots i wrote a private mail.

I will try to describe in more detail.

First yes it is the new format v12 *.tibx

Backup is done on a win 7 machine (backupserver) with Agent for Vmware.

First location is on this win 7 machine (backupserver)

Second location is on a Linux-Appliance (Samba share)

Backup Rule is Weekly Full, Daily Incremental

Retentionrule (for first and second location) is

2 Weeks for Full

13 Days for Incremental.

So what i get on the win 7 machine is:

example.tibx 12 KB

example-0005.tibx 110 GB

example-0006.tibx 114 GB

example-0007.tibx 116 GB

after 13 Days it will than delete example-0005 according to the retention rule

after 14 Day is will create example-0008.tibx 100 GB

which is expected.

Ón the Linux Samba share i have:

example.tibx 12 KB

example-0005.tibx 110 GB

example-0006.tibx 114 GB

example-0007.tibx 116 GB

after 13 Days the logfile show that it has deleted example-0005.tibx on second location

but in fact it is still there.

If i look on backup console for available backups on second location it only show the backups in

example-0006.tibx and example-0007.tibx.

after 14 Days it create example-0008.tibx.

As a result i am running out of space on the second Location or i have to delete it manually.

What is curious is that if i double-click the example-0005.tibx to see what is inside it shows me the backups which are in example-0006.tibx and example-0007.tibx

but when i copy example-0005.tibx to another location and double-click it shows me the real Content of example-0005.tibx and i can open and copy files from these backups.

Hi Tom,

(sorry for the late reply - for some reasons I didn't get notifications about this thread :( )

The problem with retention rules applied to 2nd location, you've run into, should be investigated with help from our support team, since it doesn't seem to be easily reproduced (I've tried it in our QA lab) and therefore should be investigated by checking the log files/environment (plus likely involvement from development team will be required).

Thank you.

Hi Vasily,

thx for your reply, please advise where to send the log files.

Best regards

Tom
