Simultaneous VM backup operations when running multiple plans

Thread needs solution

Hi,

All of our VM agent backup plans are set to 3 simultaneous operations per VM backup appliance; this is fine and we get good backup run times and the VMware storage isn't overloaded or latency spiked.

Some of our plans overlap slightly due to the ammount I must fit into each 24h period; I'm wondering what the simultaneous limit is per VM backup appliance when this happens? If two plans overlap could there be 6 operations running on an appliance? If 3 overlap, 9 operations etc..

If this is happening is there a better way of limiting the simultaneous backup operations hitting our SAN?

Thanks

Hi,

Deleted:

The simultaneous VM backup option (even though defined in each backup plan individually) is applied on per-agent (per-appliance) basis. This means that if you have 2 backup plans each set with 3 VMs to be processed simultaneously AND these plans schedule overlaps, then there would still be maximum 3 VMs processed in parallel (not 6). The maximum for simultaneously processed VMs is selected from maximum setting from all the plans executed at the same time, for example: 1st plan with 1 VMs + 2nd plan with 3 VMs will result in 3 VMs processed simultaneously.

See my below comment.

Thank you.

Great explanation, thank you.

I've double-checked the behavior with our developers and apparently I was misleading in my previous comment: the real behavior is that there is maximum of 10 (hardcoded value) VMs processed simultaneously by one agent, so the overlapping backup plans will be processing a sum of VMs defined in "Simultaneous VM backup" option, so it would be 3+3=6 in your example, but no more than 10.

Sorry for misleading previously.

Thank you.

Any chance the logic can be changed in a later release?

Thanks

I have added your suggestion to our task to improve this option behavior (internal ID: ABR-96275). There are good chances that this change will come into the next major release of Acronis Backup, but it's unlikely that we'll be able to do it in some update for the current (12.5) version.

Thank you.

Hi Vasily,

Is there any progress with ABR-96275 ?

Thanks

Hi,

Currently this feature is pending for the next major version of Acronis Backup, e.g. 12.7 or higher. This version is currently planned only for the next year (2019). Sorry for not bringing good news here :(

Thank you.
