XenServer : Input/ouput error on backup plan

Thread needs solution

Hi,

 

I have some troubles with Acronis 12.5 Advanced.

 

Os : Windows Server 2012R2 on all

Situation :

- 16 vm on 2 physical XenServer (8 & 8)

- Acronis Backup Management server is one of this vm

- 1 physical server with a LTO 6 (tape) attached via cable SAS

 

BackUp plan :

Source : 16 vm from the XenServers

Destination : Tape via the physical server (storage node)

Time Windows : 24h

Method : Full (System + data)

 

Total space non-compressed = 1,77 TIO

Total free space on the tape = 2,33 TIO

 

Vss doctor : Everything fine on all servers

 

When I try to launch, I have 80% of errors. Only 2 - 3 servers sucessfull.

On 5 try, it's never the same servers who are sucessfull, it's completly random.

 

The error : "input/ouput error"

Hi,

The problem is related to the backup destination, e.g. to the fact that the backup is saved to tape drive (backup to any other location should run properly). Further analysis should be done with help from our support team - there could be specifics with how many tapes are available in free pool, how many are used, were any of them cleaned up, etc. Remember to capture Acronis system report from one agent which performs backup (from one of your XenServer VMs) and report from machine which runs Acronis Storage Node with tape connected to it - see https://kb.acronis.com/content/58301.

Hello, try to change backup format. Create backup plan -> Backup options -> Backup format -> select Version 11.

In the nearst update, error messages will be more specific.

Thank you. I'm talking with the acronis support since 7 days. I've send all reports & logs I can, but no solution appears for now, so I decided to post on this forum.

I will try to use the version 11.

 

But i have something to add, I have check the logs & I find a strange thing.

This backup plan have a Time Windows define on 24h. The simultanous write is not possible on the tape because it's a single tape drive. The time windows is supposed to avoid this problem by setting up a queue.

But when I check the logs, I see that one sucessfull & one error are launch simultaneously with each error.

And sorry for the difference on the language, I dont know why the error logs appears in english & the sucessfull appears in french.

 

 

When I read that, I think I understand where the error comes from. There can not be two simultaneous writes on the same tape.

But in this case, why is Acronis trying to run two backups at the same time if I set a time window?

The backup window scheduling option is defined in context of backup plan, so if there are different backup plans applied to different machines, there could be situations where the backup is started simultaneously for them. If this is not the case then we'll need to understand how the plans are configured in your case, e.g. what's the schedule, and which machines they are applied to. From your screen shots its not clear whether it's the same or different backup plans unfortunately.

It's only one backup plan with multiples VM inside. This scheduled saturday at 20:00 pm.

But, I tried to launch manualy many times.

 

I will try 2 solutions :

 

1) Backup version 11

2) Create 16 differents backup plans.

I have created 16 differents plans with backup version 12.

Everythings works very well, no error. It seems that the backup plan with multiple VM is the reasons of all errors because of the time windows that does not work.

 

This is the only solution that I have for now. If someone else have a best solution, or if Acronis want to fix this bug, I'm listening.
