Acronis Backup & Recovery Server 11 and Tape units

Thread needs solution

Dear Crew,

Although in the preivious AB&RS 10 I was able to manage tape units easily and efficiently, in the release 11 it seems it's not that easy any more. My Tape Units are not Detected,
In the Management Console "Navigation" dropdown Menu, the Item "Manage Tapes" is no longer present, hence I can't access the Detect Tapes feature as well.
In my environment I must do tape backups so that feature is essential to us.
How could I fix this?

Thanks In advance.

Tape management is available in 'Advanced' versions of Backup & Recovery 11 or if it is an upgrade (may be clean install , but using upgrade keys) from version 10.

This is a bad news for us.. indeed!! I've been told to ask you if the Standard Version of Backup & Recovery Server 11 can make use of a BlueRay Unit as a backup Destination (we need to store data backups for several years on a separate support : better if tapes but also CDs/DVDs and even bluerays disks can suit the need) otherwise we are unfortunately bound to a downgrade from B&RS11 back to B&RS 10... (upsetting for me)

Dear Marco,

Thank you for using Acronis products.

Indeed it is possible to enable Tape support at Acronis Backup & Recovery Standalone editions, but this feature is only for licenses upgraded from Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 where there was tape support.

If this is your case, please contact Acronis Customer Central and request this feature. Otherwise you should use Advanced editions of the product.

I hope I was able to answer your questions.

If there is something else I can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you, have a good day!

Ty for your answer Miguel..

well, I already got all that, since your colleague told me everything in the previous reply.
Anyhow, my new followed-up question was about the BlueRay disk Support.
Proved it is possible to make use of a DVD/R DVD/RW unit as a Backup Destination, we wanted to know if there were kinda problems when setting a 40/45 GB BlueRay/R or BlueRay/RW units as a backup destination. It would be handy fo us.

Thanks in advance and have a good day you too!

Hi Marco

If you already have a tape unit, I would suggest you contact Acronis support to get tape support added so you can continue to use the tape backup drive. the reason for this suggestion is in the past we have seen many business customers backup to DVD/CD in the past and had issues when it comes to restoring data dur to CD/DVD's not lasting a very long time (in terms of shelf life).

If you have any older CD's that you have written to say 1 year+ I would suggest you tray and read all the data from the CD\DVD to ensure you can still recover that data... We have had customers report the CD/DVD will initially read but during recovery as the disk gets to the end they start getting read errors so if checking your backups I would suggest trying to copy the entire archive file from the CD/DVD media onto your local machine to ensure you can read the entire backup archives.

We do not have many customers that I know of that backup to BlueRay and I'm not sure how much better it is but just wanted to let you know about some of our past experience with CD/DVD Backup to try help avoid any issue or enable to you ensure testing is in place for your backups.

In terms of how to backup to s DVD/CD drive generally when selecting the location were to save the backup you can expand your local system drive and select the optical drive required such as: http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ABR11-5/index.html#867.html
