After restoring files and reboot I get an MBR2 and MBR 1 error

Thread needs solution

I am helping my daughter who lives in another city with a True Image 2009 problem.  She is using Windows XP SP3 and True Image Home 2009

Tonight she used Acronis True Image Home 2009 to restore a Outlook Express folder from the external backup drive.  Everything appeared to be going good and at the very end of the restore progress bar several messages appeared about autoexec.bat, and several other system files.  She had the choice to Retry, Ignore or Cancel and she chose Ignore.

After restoral had finished True Image told her the computer had to be rebooted to complete the process.  i have never been asked to reboot when I have restored single files or folders.  She rebooted the machine and now a black screen appears with the text in the upper left corner of the screen MBR 2 error and also MBR 1 error with the phrase "Press any key to boot from Floppy".

I believe this means Master Boot Error.  She tried rebooting 3 times with the same errors appearing.

She has not created a Acronis Secure Zone and she has not created a rescue disk.

Google search tells me the MBR error might be related to Arconis True Image.

Can someone please help me with this issue so her computer will boot up?

Thanks!

Bill,

The restart may have been because some system files were being restored. I usually avoid doing that type of restore and use images instead.

If she has an image backup of the drive or any partition on the drive, she could restore the MBR and Track 0 from the image and recover the original MBR.

If she has a standard Microsoft OEM or retail XP CD, the MBR can be repaired by booting to it and starting the Recovery Console. From the console, run the fixmbr command.

Also, Acronis has a program to restore the MBR. It's available as an ISO file and can be downloaded here. Instructions can be found in the Read Before You Post thread.

MudCrab;

Thanks for your reply.  I had my daughter try to boot her machine from her Dell OEM Windows XP re-installation CD tonight and the computer either didn't recognize the CD or it wouldn't attempt to boot because after a while she got the same MBR 2 and MBR 1 error.

I will send her the Acronis program to restore the MBR that you mention above.  Do you know why her machine won't boot from the Dell OME disk?

If the computer isn't booting from the CD/DVD drive, the first thing to check is if the CD/DVD drive is set in the BIOS to boot before the hard drive. Another option is to use the BIOS boot menu (if available) to specifically select the CD/DVD drive.

I had my daughter set the Boot Menu to boot from the IDE CD Rom device and it still didn't boot from the CD.

Could the MBR 2 error and MBR 1 error cause the Dell Windows XP Reinstallation CD not to boot?

If setup and working properly, the computer should boot from a CD regardless of the contents of the hard drive.

What are the contents on the CD? Did it get created properly?

What CD media did you use? Sometimes using a different brand or type (CD-R, CD-RW) can help as some drives are picky about the types/brands they can read.

Do other CDs/DVDs boot properly?

My daughter has a Dell PC running Windows XP SP2.  She is trying to use the Windows Re-Installation CD from Dell that came with the computer.

I agree with you that if the Bios is set to boot from the CD drive which it is that the machine should boot from the Windows Re-Installation CD but I can't figure out why it is not booting from the CD.

As to your question what kind of CD (brand, etc.) is she using - It is the Dell supplied Windows Re-Installation CD that came with the computer.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks very much for your help!

Hello Bill,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]

I suppose that the computer has a floppy drive. In this case you can write a special Acronis FixMBR utility to a diskette.

Please download special Acronis utility from here. Use it to create a floppy and boot the machine from the floppy.

The MBR will be rewritten once you boot the computer from the created media and confirm that you want to fix the MBR.

Thank you.
