Backing up /Restoring Solaris - will it work?

Thread needs solution

Got Solaris 10 installed on my laptop.

If I boot from Acronis boot CD, it lets me backup the entire disk. Will it work if I do the same and restore?

Is it OS independent or does it rely on the os being windows based?

Anyone ever tried backup and restore of anything other than a windows based machine?

Hmmm. Backup and restore seems to work but then PC boots up with Acronis etc etc and then GRUB on the screen and then hangs?

Any ideas Acronis?

When using GRUB, it may work better to do Entire Disk Image backups/restores instead of partitions. Another option is to create a separate /boot partition for GRUB so that it doesn't get disturbed when you do a restore of any of the other partitions.

It's fairly normal for GRUB to need a repair after a restore that affects it.

Tried this again using whole disk backup. Still didnt work so I booted from sol cd and ran installgrub.

It did boot ok this time but theres something not right. It complains about the time being different to mboard time and most of the services fail to start.

Hello Paul,

Thank you for using Acronis Corporate Products.

It looks like you have restored the archive to a dissimilar hardware. Could you please confirm or disprove this?

Thank you.

Hello Paul,

Thank you for your response.

Since Acronis program doesn't support Solaris OS, it creates a sector-by-sector backup. And the program recovers the archive as it is, sector-by-sector. I assume that the OS malfunction is related to the laptop hardware configuration, for example, by a built-in special firmware chip of a hard drive or something similar.

Thank you.

OK. I guess if Solaris is not supported I cant complain but thought I'd give it a try anyway.
